I have just aquired a DP-870. Does anyone know of a remote (universal or Marantz) that will control the volume of this unit?

Most Marantz gear uses the same volume codes, so you should be able to use just about any recent (like in the last 8 or so years) Marantz remote or a universal with Marantz codes. Cheap - you can get a RC2000MkII used very cheap these days. Or look into one of the Harmony remotes maybe.

It's nice to hear that Marantz is consistent with their remote control codes; another brand that I know for sure does the same is Onkyo. Onkyo adds new codes on new receivers for features that didn't exits on older receivers but if you have an old remote from an older model it will control the basic functions of the new receiver just fine because the codes are the same.

That makes it easier to program a universal remote even if its pre-programmed database is lacking the newer codes because you can go to http://www.remotecentral.com and get a device profile for any Marantz receiver, load it into a $20 All-For-One remote and use that to teach your univeral - without ever having a 'real' Marantz remote.

I've been using my RC2000MkII for ~5 years now with a number of different receivers, and it does controll all basic functions. All I have to do with it when I get a new piece of gear or change (Marantz) receivers is plug in the codes for any new functions. I didn't like the touchscreen (3200 aka Pronto) that came with my 8300, so I use it in my bedroom because I only need CD, volume and on/off. But it is nice that I can go from one room to the other with either remote and still use them for the receiver/amp.
