I had never heard of this brand before, but there's a store here in Richfield called Audio Perfection that carries them and I was really impressed with it. It's the entry-level sub for $1,100. I think it was the Q150E Mk II. I went there looking for a sub around $500 and very quickly was looking at this one. It sounded excellent with plenty of sub-40Hz punch and rumble. My HT is small - about 12'x14'. The $600 sub they showed me was a Martin Logan which showed off some great sound as well, again, it was the entry-level ML sub.

I need a great sub for both movies and music, but the more I think about it, the more I think I'll be listening to music...

I can swing the $1,100, but I also don't want overkill. Advice?

P.S. When I asked them about Velodyne, they scoffed at it...

I have the same sub and love it. I use both the high level inputs and the low level input. I do this so I can use the sub with my turntable. This is also useful if you have a SACD player with no bass management. Using the high level for HT allows you to tweak the subwoofer for that use seperately from music.

Just one note if you go with the REL. Follow REL's setup directions which are a bit different than most subs. I got much better results that way.
