According to the instruction manual: when inserting a SA-CD hybrid disc the sa-cd/cd indicator light should glow when the sa/cd layer is manually selected - this is confirmed, BUT upon pressing 'play', there is no sound? See attached file illustrating the relevant controls situated on the left side of the players front panel.
The high quality player was purchased new presents no issues besides the above?
Any useful advice? Many thanks.

Your pdf is upside down fwiw. Looking at the manual I'm curious what your connection method is (digital out or analog?) and if this is a 2.0 or 5.1 SACD layer that isn't playing? Is the standard cd layer playing okay?

Unless you are connected to you receiver or preamp using analog connection from Player you will not get any sound when playing the SACD layer. The protocol is to preclude you from making a digital copy. You will get sound from the digital output when you have selected the CD layer. Of course, the CD layer will also be output from analog outputs.

My players are connected digitally (albeit via hdmi) and I get all the layers. Where in the manual does it say you must have an analog connection to play an SACD? I don't see it.

lovinthehd, you can enjoy SACD and Multi-Channel SACD from an HDMI output from your universal player; and, if you have RCA output from that player you can enjoy SACD; but, you cannot output the SACD layer from IEC 958 or optical S/PDIF. Now, you might think you are outputting SACD from IEC 958 or optical S/PDIF but you are actually outputting CD layer. Some universal players have an LED which indicates the layer being output.

Odd that that is not mentioned in the manual....

Yeah, that is odd, although it might be buried in the manual. I was an early adopter of SACD. I bought a Sony DVP-S9000es back in 2000. It has RCA stereo output and both IEC 958 and optical S/PDIF outputs. Those, of course, carry CD, as well as 5.1 Dolby Digital; but, they do not carry SACD. The idea then and now is they (the record companies) don't want you and me digitally copying SACDs. HDMI outputs SACD since it complies with the SACD protocol, that's to say, you can't make a direct SACD digital recordings easily. At any rate, I just got an OPPO UDP-205 today, so now I can enjoy my multi-channel SACDs, as well as Stereo. I still do not have a pre/pro with HDMI input but the OPPO has multi-channel RCA output so I'm set.

That is correct - SACD will only output over analog or HDMI. No SPDIF.

I looked thru the manual in various places like making connections and troubleshooting and didn't see it, maybe they just assumed one knows that....

Here's another thread with issues on this player relating to the SACD layer.

Oh! You know what, I was not thinking about the problem as presented in that thread; but, I have experienced it. A few years ago I purchased a Dire Straits Hybrid SACD having a stereo layer, CD layer, and Multi-Channel layer. I expected my Sony DVP-S9000es to play the SACD stereo layer from RCA output but it did not, the unit only played the disc's CD layer, through either digital or analog outputs. I thought the disc was defective, or not calibrated correctly. Amazon said I could send it back but I got too busy to fool with it. Thing is, I got that disc out today and took it for a spin on my new player I installed today; and, it plays the multi-channel SACD layer just fine. I have not tried the stereo layer. At any rate, yes, the OP might have a bad disc. Trying others would tell.

I did as suggested....added a analogue connection in tandem with the optical, but still....NO SOUND?
I might mention that the optical connection plays all types of cd....yet the sacd capability remains elusive!
Thank you for your response.

Do you have other SACDs, hybrid or Stereo? And do you have some CDs which you can attempt to play. If they play without incident, you may just have a bad SACD. I have the Dire Straits Brothers In Arms hybrid SACD which will not play Stereo SACD layer in my Sony DVP-S9000es. The SACD light does not come on, just the CD light; and, the player plays the CD layer. I have another SACD player which plays both the multi-channel and Stereo SACD layers.
