Red Dawn was the shizzle for a kid in the 80's.:D

Tom Cruise's son Connor is set to star in a remake of the 1984 action war drama Red Dawn, according to reports.

The 14-year-old will play Daryl, the youngest in the group of high school students who wage war against foreign invaders, the Hollywood Reporter said.

The original film helped launch the Hollywood careers of its stars Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen.

Filming is due to begin in Detroit next month and is scheduled to be released in September 2010.

Connor Cruise, who was adopted by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, made his big screen debut last year as the young Will Smith character in drama Seven Pounds.

He will join other cast members including former Home and Away stars Chris Hemsworth as leader Jed Eckert and Isabel Lucas as cheerleader Erica who has to be rescued from an internment camp.

The cast are reportedly heading off in a few weeks for military training in preparation for the film at an undisclosed location.

Unlike the original film, which was released towards the end of the Cold War, the reversion will see the group of teens, who become known as the Wolverines, invaded by Chinese and Russian troops.

The original was a fun movie at the time and I enjoyed it, but it is and was a "b" movie at best. I caught it on tv a few months back and time hasn't been particularly kind to it. I'm not expecting much from the remake, hopefully they'll keep it an interesting story and not go overboard with it.

I thought the original was great.

Think about how many times high school was boring and then suddenly the russians take over a high school lol. It's a great premise and a fun movie for sure.

I'm glad the Cold War is over for now, but I fear we may see it come back.

I also caught this on TV a few months back but I have to say that I enjoyed it. I'll watch it anytime I see that it's on. As far as the remake goes, as long as it doesn't star Will Ferrel and isn't directed by the Wachowski brothers, it may stand a chance of being a decent movie.

I actually enjoyed it too and would watch it again, but it was much cheesier than I recalled, a bit dated, and much harder to take as seriously now as when it came out. I'm more concerned about the remake being all over the top bad cgi effects with lots of flash and not much bang.

My first date ever was a "blind date" that some buddies set me up on. Anyway we saw a double feature "Red Dawn" and "Oxford Blues" with Rob Lowe. Anyway turns out the girl was an overly sexxed nympho and I had to go back to see "Red Dawn" because I didn't get to see much of it the first time. I recall liking the movie when I was a yout in the 80's but watching it a couple years back, I look at how niave I was about what a good movie was. I mean it was okay at best but as a teen that was the shiznit. Teens with automatic rifles and klling Russkies, what's not to like.

Best scene was C. Thomas Howell handing the dishes to the girls and telling them to "earn their keep" :D
