I don't know what type of receiver and cable box you have I am using the analog outputs from my cable box connected to the tv/dss input on my tecnics reciever. the tv is hooked to the monitor output and i am using the vcr input for the vcr works well.

thats what i was thinking of doing
running the cable box into the s vid IN and an s vid cable going to a second in, would that work?

Any video input on your receiver will do, they are all the same. The name is irrelevant, they are just for convenience.

You MUST connect the analog audio outputs of the cable box to the receiver even if you are also using a digital input. Receivers will only allow recording of an analog signal. Also you usually have to use the same type of video cable; ie if you connect the s-video out of your cable box to video1 on the receiver then the vcr must also be connected to the receiver via s-video.
