Recording Cassette Deck and Turntable Problems

I just recently bought the Audio-Technica AT-PL50 turntable and I've been having some trouble with trying to get it to work with my Technics SU-V76 stereo-integrated amplifier's cassette deck(RS-T16), If you didn't notice on that site's description of the AT-PL50 turntable, it has a switch on it that'll allow you to switch from the built-in pre-amp(AUX) or to keep it at PHONO. What I'm trying to do is record some records onto tape, I kept it at PHONO but it wouldn't let me record, I figured maybe if I messed around with the way the cassette deck's RCA cables were connected in the back, I'd stumble upon the solution, but that didn't work, bare in mind this Technics system is a bit old, but it still works well, it was just collecting dust in my garage. I remembered I never had a problem with recording CDs onto tapes, so flicked the switch onto the pre-amp and connected the RCA cables onto the CD/AUX jacks, still not letting me record though.

Aux vs Phono affects the level of the signal sent from the turntable. If it is set to Aux it would be using the turntable's built-in pre-amp which applies the RIAA curve and sends a normal line-level signal; otherwise it sends a very low level signal and should be connected to the Phono input on the receiver so the receiver can apply the RIAA curve and send the result to whatever analog outs it supports.

I don't see the turntable connected to Phono in the picture but it appears that the tape deck is connected to tape in and tape out on the receiver. It's hard to tell from the picture but I think you need the turntable connected to Phono in on the receiver and the tape deck's in and out connected to the in and out of the receiver.

The receiver should send the analog signal that came in on Phono to the tape Rec Out (which should be connected to the tape deck's In). If the tape out is connected back to the receiver tape in (the one marked 'playback') you'd have to engage a tape monitor switch to hear what is being recorded but even without that the recording should happen properly.

Pretty much what MDS said, but in fewer words.

1) Set the turntable to NOT use it's internal preamp.

2) Connect it to the receiver's phono input.

3) Connect the tape deck to the receiver's tape monitor in/out jacks, with respect to the proper in/out relationships.

4) Turn on the receiver, select phono, and play a record. The signal should be going to the tape deck.

Well, as i've said..I had already messed around with the way the tape deck's RCA cables are connected and I still got the same results with it not letting me record. I'm a beginner(hence where i'm posting) so I'm still learning, I'm confused because both the TAPE1 and TAPE2/EXT jacks look exactly the same, if you're telling me to put one set of the tape deck's RCA cables in each of those two TAPE1 and TAPE2/EXT jacks, then i've done that and still haven't been able to record both with the PHONO switch on in the right jacks and the pre-amp switch on in the CD/AUX jacks.

Maybe the receiver doesn't automatically send analog input signals to analog outs (like Tape out) and you have to put the receiver into 'record mode'. Can you check the receiver manual to see if it requires such a thing?

I don't have any manuals, as i've said I remember I had no problems with recording CDs onto tapes, so that's why I put the turntable in CD/AUX with the pre-amp switch on. However the tape decks will record with eachother, say if I put a tape in DECK B that is just playback, DECK A that is playback/record will let me record whatever is on DECK B. Now the only thing I'm having problems with is it recording whatever is on my turntable which is just wont let me do, it'll start up and then just stop, not recording a single sound.
