is there a true advantage to using a record stabilizer/ record weight?
i have a cork platter mat with an aluminium platter. direct drive.
wondering if i should spend the money to purchase a weight or if its nonsense.

It's nonsense. It is just another audiophool Tweak. They should not be used on belt drive turntables not designed for the. In other turntables it will add some stress and wear to the lower spindle bearing.
