Howdy,

Could use some advice. I have decided to buy an Axiom Epic 80 Home theatre set of loudspeakers to replace my currently mass marketed system (after many hours research of have been enlightened.)

I am looking to replace my current Denon AVR-250 (I think, been over seas for six months and don't remember now) to help power them.

I have a budget maxium of $1000 for the Receiver and I am not sure what I should get that would take advantage of the new loudspeakers. Ideally, I would like to have a system that provides more power than the loudspeakers can handle but I don't think that is feasible in this situation.

Any recommended tradeoff's would help. I have been looking at some Denon systems (3803) and some Onkyo. Not set on any one name brand. Really more interested in what type of power output I should look for in the receiver to support the Axiom loudspeakers.

Thanks,
Brad

You really can't go wrong. Take a look at the new Yamaha RX-V2400 as well (since you can) and compare features. I think you'd be happy with any of those as they will all drive the Epic 80 system well. At your price point, you'll be looking at 80W-120W receivers. Since all of them are rated differently, don't get bogged down in the numbers as much - focus on features and ease-of-use. I say this because all of the units mentioned so far should sound great.

For curiosity sakes. What type of Receiver or Pre-Amp/Amp combination would I need to not worry about clipping for the Axiom 80 loudspeakers. On average their speakers are rated at 300W (haven't seen anything more specific, only that general rating). Is there a consumer level amp that can provide that output or would I be looking at something in the range of $10000?

Also, thanks for the help. I will concentrate on the features specifically to determine what I would want.

I saw the review y'all had on the Sony DA5ES and it looked like a good buy. One thing I did notice was it had a .6% THD verse the Denons .05% or the Onkyo's .08%. I am a pretty picky listener (and Audophile poser basically) but really wonder if I would notice any difference in those systems. All this is theory as I will eventually have to listen to them for myself. Can't do it at the moment as the Middle East doesn't have a lot of Audio stores around

I've driven the Axioms with an ~80wpc $500 Onkyo.

Unless you drive an amplifier to clipping, you'll be fine. The Axioms are efficient speakers, meaning it doesn't take much power to drive them, which is why they are rated (on their website) as requiring as little as 10 watts to operate.
