To replce my Klipsch KLF 20's. I've had Klipsch speakers for a long time starting with the rf 3 towers. I have them in my home theater and they are great for that, especially with the audessy eq. A couple of years ago I bought some KLF 20's. For those who aren't familiar with them they have two 10 in woofers and midrange and tweeter horns. They sound really good with the right recordings but get harsh at high volumes or with most metal and loud rock music. I listen to everything from classic rock to indie like Modest Mouse to classic metal like Black Sabbath or Motley Crew, some Jazz, Same rap, some new pop like MGMT and Awol nation. Basically I listen to a wide range of music. I can no longer deny that the KLF 20's are just too harsh for me to enjoy for long periods of time. The midrange really gets harsh and ringy. I find myself shying away to my energy bookshelf speakers in my office.
Yesterday my friend got a pair of Polk RTA 11t towers and though they were less expensive new than the KLF's I beleive I like the sound better. Tight bass, smoother, without the harnsh highs and mids. I'm not an audiophile by any means. I just want a solid high fidelity tower that sounds smoother, without the harshness. I looked at the Pold Rti 12 which can be had for $800 per pair on ebay. I would prefer to get something that can be had for $500 or less and I'm not afraid to buy used to get a better bang for the buck. If the Polks are highly recommended I can save for them.

What do you all like?

Thanks

Jon

For 2 ch music at $500 I would go with a better set of bookshelfs since shipping towers is going to cost 20 percent of your budget... Then later add a sub... I would start with the Carnegie CSB1's {on sale from gr for $400 a pair)... and then add an svs sb1000 later on...

BUT since you want towers, If I were in the market for a $500- set of music only towers, I would pre order the XL7F's Fluance-High Performance Three-way Floorstanding Loudspeakers[h=3]SAVE $75 when you preorder
Use Coupon Code: XLPREORDER[/h]
If you preorder you get $75 off the price, that is a lot of speaker for $425, they have bottom mounted 8" subs in each cabinet... Another option is the BIC PL89II's but they are also going to be harsh like the klipsch, another fun speaker for around your budget is the cerwin vega xls28. there are not many towers I like with out a sub, and most are much higher than your budget, you can definitely get some good sounds for $500 though...

I would wait for the Xl7s after all they are "highly recommended by Gene DellaSala" lol, I am going to talk someone into buying them locally so I can have a listen...
