The picture quality on my new SXRD is AMAZING from the 480i output on my 8 year old Panny A310 DVD player -- but I too am looking for something potentially better -- especially something that is progressive scan and perhaps outputs 720P and at the top of my list is the Oppo DV971H and there allegedly is a new version (981) that is black.

It would be interesting to find something better. My question would be how much better and for how much money? Thats really what I am looking to find out.
I also wonder if using HDMI cable would be as good as it's gonna get with any dvd upconverter?

It all depends on your budget. As you get much over $300, it would make more sense to invest in a $499 HD-DVD player which upconverts standard 480i dvd's.

There are some good deals on older Denon players, as well as Panasonic's S77 and S97 players. The Oppo players are tops for the bang for buck arena. For $150, I'd probably get an Oppo.

Answered my own question

Q: Does OPDV971H work with TVs and projectors with HDMI input? Will I have any video quality loss going from DVI to HDMI? How do I handle the audio part?
A: Yes. You can connect OPDV971H with your HDMI display device using the DVI to HDMI cable provided by OPPO. There will be no quality loss associated with the conversion from DVI to HDMI, since HDMI is compatible with DVI.
Audio can be handled one of two ways: analog and digital out. Analog out requires the use of White and Red cables to be plugged into the back of the 971H's Mix Output and mated with the TVs stereo input for HDMI. Please note that some HDMI television units will use a mini-jack (1/4" plug) for HDMI audio. Digital out requires a receiver unit. Digital output can be done either through the Digital or the Coaxial ports of the 971H and the corresponding receiver inputs.

You probably don't want to spend this kind of money (over 3-grand), but I am truly amazed on how good standard DVDs look on my 60" Sony from my Denon DVD-5910 player.

No doubt, especially with the Realta HQV chip:cool: I've noticed the new 3930CI will have it also and the 2930CI gets the Reon VX HQV chip, great news for those with a smaller budget.

cheers:)

I have no idea what those chips are and what they do!

These chips are basically video processors, and the HQV ones are classed as the best in the world.

The Realta HQV chip was developed by Silicon Optix and Teranex and is the industry’s first fully software programmable video array processor capable of performing over 1 trillion operations per second. It incorporates Teranex’s software algorithms, which have been refined though over 100,000 hours of content verification and were previously only available as a system normally used by Broadcast and Hollywood studios starting at $60,000. The new Reon VX HQV chip is also based on the Teranex system, and from what I've read one main difference between the two is the software in the Realta HQV chip can be upgraded but the Reon VX HQV's software cannot. There are other differences but I'm not sure what effects they have on the video processing.

So basically these chips kick a$$:D

cheers:)
