Recomendations for 2 channel setup (pre/pro/spkrs/snd proc) for under $5,000

Hello,

I'm a newbie to the forums and wanted to get some advice about putting together a 2 channel system for my living room. I'm looking to keep the total price under $5,000, but still build an entry level audiophile system. I haven't yet demoed any equipment, but wanted to get some advice on systems I can test locally and also ones from internet direct dealers. I would like to find a 2 channel preamp that has good bass management or possibly a good sound processor or a solid DAC. The only component I have from an existing system is my Onkyo DV-CP704 DVD changer.

Here's some background:

- My room is 21x14 connected to a 13x10 dining room with 8' ceilings.

- I listen to a variety of music (hard rock, alternative, jazz/vocal, classical), so I want to be able to reproduce all types of music with deep tight bass (not boomy), excellent midranges, good imaging, etc.

- I'm looking to purchase a pre/pro combo and floor speakers (unless anyone recommends bookshelf speakers and sub) to handle all types of music well.

- I need to take account WAF, since my other half does not want huge towers in our living room. If I can find a floor stander that's not too large or obtrusive (less than 4' tall) that would help.

- Only main constraint is that the room is filled with furniture. I have room for floor speakers, but there may be only a few inches on either side of the speakers clearance (couches/cabinet or table).

I'm just beginning the process and some brands I've started to review for pre/pro's and amps include:

- Parasound (Halo p3/a21 or p3/a23 or newclassic 2100)
- Outlaw (or possibly RR2150 receiver)
- Rotel
- Emotiva
- SimAudio
- Vincent Audio

Some speakers brands include:

- Dali (IKON, Helicon)
- Revel (F52, F32, F12)
- Thiel (cs2.4)
- Def Tech
- Spendor (S8e, S6e)
- Epos
- Aperion
- Axiom M80
- Magnepan
- (for sat/sub combos: Gallo, Orb, SV Sound, or Hsu Ventriloquist)

Thanks in advance!:)

If you're going that route, you might as well look at this Dussun IA:

Mark Levinson's Red Rose Music $8,000 Classic speaker is one of the Aurum Cantus speakers and the $7,000 Affirmation Integrate Amp is the Dussun v8i!

I would love to get the Dussun v8i. Those Aurum Cantus speakers look great.

However, I don't think they offer a free 30-day return policy. And if you need service/product support, I don't know where you would get them since these products are Chinese?

They look great and they may sound great, though.:D

Often times our clients are looking for something EXACTLY like what you're decribing. Sometimes, though, it can be tough to mix speakers into your decore.

I have a few suggestions for you. 1st, I would do an integrated amp combo. At your budget, the NAD M3 (MSRP: $2800)http://nadelectronics.com/products/masters-series/M3-Dual-Mono-Integrated-Amplifier would be an excellent piece. Lots of power, which will be needed for a high quality floor standing speaker. It would also leave you open to (down the road) going with the NAD M5 CD/SACD player which, besides being a great disc player, looks really cool when they're matched up.

For alternatives on the electronic side of your system, I would still recommend NAD. Their price/performance/value ratio is excellent for integrated amps. Something like the NAD C372 (MSRP $1K) http://nadelectronics.com/products/hifi-amplifiers/C372-Stereo-Integrated-Amplifier has plenty of power for you, but DOES lack a lot of the features of the Master Series Piece (and looks quite a bit less, shall we say, WAF?).

On the speaker side of things, well, this is where it gets interesting.

I was all set to recommend the Canton Karat 770 DC (MSRP $2500 pair) http://www.canton.de/en-produktdetail-karat-karat770dc.htm , but with your cabinet/furniture situation, I don't know how something with side firing woofers is going to be able to breathe properly. They are beautiful to look at (in gloss piano black they're stunning!), under 4' tall, and have a fabulous sound.

The Jamo C 809 (MSRP $2K pair) http://jamo.com/Default.aspx?ID=5908&M=Shop&PID=17140&ProductID=17795 is an excellent speaker. Really nice looking & high quality build, too. This speaker is under 4' (barely) and would really fill your room with very very good sound. All of the drivers are front firing, so no worries there. They are not super bass heavy. I would describe this as an accurate product focussed on NOT being in your face or forward. They will benefit from having good electronics powering them.

I like the C 809 better in all respects than the Energy RC-70 http://www.energy-speakers.com/v2/products/product-page.php?id=266 , which occupies the same price point @ $2K per pair. As a dealer of both brands, I have strong knowledge and comparisons of both lines. The Energy bookshelf speaker from the RC line is excellent for $500 but, in my opinion, the towers from Jamo offer a better look, better build, and better sound for the same $. However, I won't be in your home listening to them so you'll have to try them out for yourself!

My last suggestion is NOT the best looking speaker on the planet. Not even close. It's built well & it's not ugly, but it's just a plain box speaker. The speaker IS currently available, but the manufacturer is updating their website & it's not on there yet. I will link some articles with pictures of them though....

The BG Z-92 (MSRP $2500) is an AWESOME speaker. Nothing on the market sounds like a BG speaker. The BG tweeter yields an incredibly unique presentaion of detail & depth in music that in 10 years "InTheIndustry" I have not heard. I think that BG really acheived something special sonically with the Z-92, they just look plain (available in black, cherry, maple)! If you can find a dealer near you that has these, just go give them a listen to try them out.

The Thiels have a nice form factor as well as fit and finish. I enjoy what little experience I have had with them. I can't recommend them to you, but I can recommend you listen to them.:D

Ok I'll add my usual suggestion to the mix....

BUY USED !!

Audiogon.com, videogon.com and sometimes ebay has some excellent deals and you get far better products then you could get at retail prices...

You're already getting a ton of good suggestions, but I think you should also take a listen to Monitor Audio speakers if you have a local dealer... MA has several lines of floor standers & stand-mounted speakers; many of which would fit into your budget...

Aurum Cantus speakers look even better than the pictures suggest — much better (particularly the U.S. versions). And they sound great. I own the older U.S. version of:

http://www.kellsieavdesign.com/products/Leisure2SE.htm

I am using them (all channels) with a pair of SVS CS-Ultra subwoofers (old 12" woofer version). For the first time, I do not feel the need to EVER upgrade my speakers. It is a great feeling.

I guess you can say that you own the Mark Levinson RRM's equivalent speakers?:D:D

If ML RRM would sell all their products the same price as their equivalent Aurum Cantus & Dusson, I would definitely get some.:D

FYI, you should be able to find the rc-70 for $1.1k to $1.4 at this time.

Have you thought about in walls and an excellent sub woofer? That's the route I took in my case where WAF was an important consideration.

Anyway, you mentioned towers or bookshelves with sub woofer. I think you ought to consider a woofer regardless of what form fronts you take.
