Recievers Choice...

Hi.

I am new to both AVS and Audio, HD DVD stuffs in general. I bought the Toshiba HD-XA2 a few days ago, and I was impressed by its visuals stuffs. I have Samsung DLP that does 1080i over HDMI, and it's still awesome.

Now that I experienced the visuals, I am dying to find out how the sound would be like if I have a proper equipments. I have about $2 - 2.5k to spare on this, so I started searching. Needless to say, there are so many options out there, I am so confused what receiver, speakers, and etc to buy.

As for speaker, I am thinking of getting Klipsch RF-7 for fronts for now, and my existing speakers (not so good at all) for rest pieces. I found this for $999 + shipping at ebay.

Now, I need a help with a receiver. What receiver should I get that would match the speakers and HD-DVD Player I have? With all these DTS MA, TrueHD, and etc.. Does this mean the receiver I buy must be capable of decoding it? Finally, I am planning to get rest of the speakers (center and 2 rear) in Klipsch also.

With that said, what receiver should I get that would give me the most bang for the buck and some of future proof? I am eying a upcoming Onkyo receiver, but not sure if that's really what I need.

I am budging about $1000 for receiver. If I could get cheaper receiver, I could get 1 or 2 more speakers to finish the set up.

Welcome to Audioholics,

Given what speakers you are getting, and your budget I highly recommend the Onkyo TX-SR805 (slated for release this month in the US). It has all the decoding you are asking about along with THX Ultra 2 certification and loads of power. This thing is about 50 pounds or about 22 kg, so very heavy. You can preorder it online and that will be about $1000. You can upgrade you other speakers later on if that is the route you prefer. I am sure that others here will suggest that you get all your speakers and maybe go for a less expensive, but less flexible receiver like the Onkyo TX-SR605 that lacks preouts so you are stuck with its onboard amplification.

I really think you are better off getting the TX-SR805 and the RF-7s now and then getting the matching surrounds, center, and subwoofer (in that order) at a later date.

Really appreciate your suggestions. I was thinking of getting in that order also. Maybe I should just do that. One thing that I was curious was this HD-DVD Player. It says it decodes TruHD, and etc on player. Doesn't that mean it's already decoded by player then? Which means, the receiver I buy do not need to have this capability at all since they are decoded and sent as PCM(is this right? )

As for pre-amp out, I am guessing the receiver you are suggesting as a capability to add the pre-emps later if I want. Is that right?

The player will decode it, but I don't know if there are any HDMI 1.2 receivers that do full 7.1 LPCM for the HD formats. There is no garranty.

As for preamp outs, the 605 does not have them and preamp is for amplifier add-ons. Since the 605 doesn't have loads of power it would be nice to have the preouts.

HD-DVD Audio

Any HDMI 1.1 or 1.2 receiver should be able to receive 5.1 channel PCM from the HD-DVD player. Also any entry level receiver without HDMI can use the 7.1 channel analog inputs from the HD-DVD player to play the DTS-HD or other soundtrack. HDMI 1.3 receivers will allow the receiver to do the decoding vs. the source (HD-DVD player).
