My husband has bought a little system for the house and now he has left it in the boxes, because he can't figure out out how to put it all together...well i have it all setup and working almost perfectly...but no sound is coming out??? the video is great, but not a sound??
We have a Yamaha RX V2500 reciever, and we have our DVD, VHS, and music cast all hooked into the reciever. and then i hooked the reciever into our plasma..it's a panasonic..i also hooked the subwoofer into the reciever, but i only hooked up two speakers, for now. both the speakers and sub are paradigm...the video works for everything..i can see VHs movies, and DVDs, and the screen for my musiccast, but no sound, i have my reciever set on 2 channel, but still no sound??? is it because of the different name brands?? i know that maybe a stupid question, but i'm new to this whole thing, but my husband comes home in 2 days and i wanted it all set up for him...but now i think i may have broken something???

that could be tons of things. are you sure that you have the speakers attatched correctly to the reciever? negative to negative, positive to positive, etc.?

Run the auto setpu with the mike and see if you get sound out of the speakers. The other thing to check is turn the Receiver on tuner and tune to a radio station that you know comes in. Since you are not using any other external devices you should get sound. Also check to make sure that the front speakers are in the speaker A terminals on the back, and that the speaker A button is pushed in on the receiver on the front.

Another thing to check is your audio input selection.

On your remote, make certain that...if you're playing a DVD, that you have pressed the "DVD" button (or you could try the "Pure Direct" button). The same holds true for other inputs. If you're playing a VHS tape, make sure you activate that input to the receiver (via the corresponding remote button). Please also note that for viewing video aspects of your system, you have to change the receiver to the appropriate video input by using the "TV Input" button on your remote. But it seems you probably have the video working okay.

Much good luck on getting it up and running to surprise your hubby. If you have a digital camera, a close-up of the back of the receiver and your hookups would help the folks here more easily diagnose the problem. But don't worry, I don't think you've broken anything. It seems it's just a setting or hookup problem.

EDIT: This problem is NOT because of separate name brands. Don't worry about that, either.

Good cheer.

My stepson couldn't get sound out of his new receiver. Neither could I. His mother brought it back to BB last Saturday, where the staff couldn't get it to work either. It was replaced without charge and was set up without a hitch.

Not owning a 2500, I looked at a pic of the back of it.

It sounds like you hooked up the speakers to the "Presence/Zone 2" area. You'll need to connect them to "screw in parts", specifically the Front "A" ones.

Then you should be set.

Welcome to AH msbug0, sorry to hear you're having trouble setting things up... :(

Best advice so far is what Mikeyj92 said. I own the RX-V2500 and it sounds exactly like what you've done. No harm, but you're not going to get anything sound out of the receiver, either.

Here's a little snapshot of where your left and right front speakers should be hooked into on the 2500 (click thumbnails below). After you do and turn the receiver back on (as it should be off when you're connecting speakers to avoid any damage to the receiver and injury to yourself), turn the volume up until it reads about -40 on the front panel, this should be sufficient volume to hear sound from both the front left and right speakers.

In addition to this, turn the 'Program' button on the front (see image below as well) untiil the front panel reads 'STEREO'.

Any further questions, just let us know... -TD
