<font color='#000000'>two questions. why do some recievers start out at say -80 db and go to +10 and some start at -100 and go to 0db. second question, why do they even start in the negative? means no sound to me?</font>

<font color='#000000'>Manufacterers, it seems, have different standards for calibrating their volume controls. &nbsp;Many peg Odb as the reference level though to what they correlate, that's where the differences lie. &nbsp;Some would peg 0db to correlate with the rated RMS power output, say 100 watts. &nbsp;the negative db markings relate to attentuating that in increments of minus 1 db down to negative &nbsp;infiinity which means total silence, while the positive, which are often 4db to 6 db more, relates to going further up above the rated power to the point of clipping which means the amo is rated well below clipping.</font>
