Reciever advice needed and appreciated

Hello. I am new to your website. I have a long interest in audio and A/V issues and now I'm returning to Vinyl. I am very glad to be here!

I would like advice on a receiver - either just stereo or A/V - that can handle a phonograph (via a simple phono input) and if possible, also has Bluetooth. My budget is under $300.00.

I am looking at the Onkyo 626 which just squeaks in under budget now, but the reviews on Onkyo seem uniformly mixed. So I am turning to the experts.

My preference is A/V as I'd eventually like to use the unit for showing movies. But if there is a great stereo receiver you recommend, I can be flexible.

I've bought new speakers, btw, and I believe they require 8 OHMs, if that's helpful.

Thank you in advance,

MonteMallin

Welcome to the forum, MonteMallin!

I own the 626 and thinks it's a really nice receiver overall. I wrote up my thoughts at the thread linked here. I happen to prefer Pioneer's MCACC auto calibration system if you have multiple listening locations, but for one location, I think Audyssey and MCACC do very comparable jobs. The 626 has plenty of power to play my speakers loud with clarity (and I have a 7.1 setup). The onscreen menu isn't as refined as the similarly priced Denon AVR-E400, but it's not bad.

Regarding a phono input, you can always get a separate phono preamp for around $20 to use with any analog input. So, don't restrict your shopping to only receivers with a phono input because that can definitely narrow down your options these days. As I'm sure you've found, not many receivers have phono inputs anymore.

Hi - thank you for the quick response! I read your review on Amazon and was very, VERY impressed with what you had to say. I appreciate your taking the time for such a thoughtful review.

Great point on the pre-AMP. Someone mentioned that if I go that route, I should look for one that does digital-audio conversion. any thoughts/recommendations are welcome.

It seems like the Onkyo has been criticized for overheating and a few other problems. Has that not been your experience? And I guess myother question is, are there others you'd recommend?

I like the features of the Onkyo a lot. It is selling for $299.00 now and I'd expect it to go down a bit more. But I've just been reluctant to commit to it as there seem to be concerns.

Your input is really appreciated!

Thanks for the compliment, Monte!

I completely understand your hesitation. Onkyo has been known for having heat issues these past few years, and people are leery of it. The 626 has a fan mounted inside to help cool off the components, and I think the addition of the fan was new to last year's models. I never heard it running, and I'm pretty sensitive to those types of noises. It may have never turned on, though, as it might have a temperature sensor and switch to activate the fan. I have pretty good room for ventilation, too. That said, I only used it for about a week because I prefer my older Pioneer Elite to it. I have two distinctly different listening locations, and Advanced MCACC can store multiple configuration whereas regular Audyssey cannot.

I happen to be a Pioneer fan, myself. I look for the model that has everything that I want, and then try to find/wait for a good price on it. The VSX-1123 was the top competitor to the 626 last year, IMO, but it's $350 on Amazon right now - so out of your budget. There are always sales, though. :) That's a 7.1 system, though. The 5.1 systems are less expensive, and it just depends on what features you want. Denon makes nice gear, too. The AVR-E400 is a fantastic receiver, but the remote sucks (ahem, only runs the receiver) and it has the same Audyssey system as the Onkyo. The only experience with this year's models that I have is the Denon AVR-S900, which is the update to the E400. I wish that I'd had the chance to audition the new crop of Pioneer's, but I wasn't that lucky. :)

For a preamp, other members here know better than me. There's a member named "TLS Guy" that tends to recommend those things. I tend to just go to Amazon and look for a highly rated yet good value unit, like the Behringer Microphono PP400 for $25. I haven't been bashed for those recommendations, yet. :D So, maybe they aren't too bad.

hmm...I want to take some time to digest and follow up on some of your ideas.

I'm also thinking though of taking a simpler route. what if I just focused on a high quality stereo receiver that had phono and bluetooth, and maybe a TV input that I could add a TV to? I'll bet something like that exists - even without the TV part. Many ways to approach this, that's for sure!

Appreciated,

Monte

Then take a look of the Harman Kardon models.
