Hi Folks,

Just renovating my house and wanting to go with a Recessed wall mount, PID 6519 from Monoprice to be exact- here's the URL: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082811&p_id=6519&seq=1&format=2

What I'm wondering is if I can use this on an exterior wall... I'm down to studs, and wanting to reconfigure them for this, but now am thinking that because the wall mount needs the full depth of the 2x4 with drywall on it, that there's essentially nothing for insulation behind the wall mount. Considering the opening to accommodate the mount, a power outlet, and 2 2" pipes for cables, is this something I should be concerned about? Or should I just forget about using a recessed wall mount on an exterior wall?

Your help is appreciated! Thanks!

If you want to recess the TV, build another stud wall over the original and then recess it. You wouldn't need to have a a cold wall behind the TV, you'll have far more room for whatever you need for cabling and since you're down to the studs, it's the best time to do this. Make sure to maintain the vapor barrier, too.

That mount is pricey, I think you could get a regular articulating mount and hang it flush then mount the flat panel push it back against the wall tight and then measure off the wall to the front of the panel(Mount, panel thickness, etc)
Now you could build a picture frame out of stock to give you that depth giving a one inch clearance all the way around, then make up two doors for the build and your panel will be recessed in it's own space. I guess maybe I got carried away as I don't really know what exactly you are doing but I certainly would not lose my insulation to get er recessed if building another false wall is not an option maybe you could pack the existing wall out with 2 inch stock fastening with 3 1/2 inch screws and glue.
Lets see some pics :)

hmm... you're confirming what I was afraid of- don't lose the insulation.

What I was trying to achieve was a TV that sat as close to the wall as possible while still having the ability to pull it out, tilt, and swivel. I want to hide as much of the 'guts' behind as possible. I guess I'm asking for too much!

I guess I do need to go with a regular articulating mount... any suggestions on which one btw? I want the shallowest one possible then... perhaps this one?

I like the idea of aluminum arms- less flex, but this one looks 'thick'
