Is there anyway to find out who sends the chicklets if they don't put there name beside it? I find that disconcerting that some posters don't stand behind their chicklets be it red or green.

Ditto here.
And to the Douchebag that's been sending me unsigned red...

Man up and sign your name.

Sorry, that isn't intended to dimenish anyone's feelings on this matter. I know how rep can get to people (it gets to me, too). However, these threads come up from time to time, let people vent about getting red chicklets, then inevitably get closed.

There is no way to tell for sure. One reason why I posted here was to make this point - anyone can write anything in the text box when giving rep. Anything. They can sign it with someone else's name is they want. Keep that in mind. I suggest PMing someone if you are upset about a red to make sure it was them, and don't just fire off some retaliation or start to accuse them on the open forum. One member in particular did that a lot and was wrong about it virtually every time - it serves no valuable purpose (unless you are a troll just trying to stir things up).

I agree. Thats why I was very politcally correct in my questioning. The site moderators are responsible for maintaining a friendly environment. This "bug" in the software needs to be addressed or the clone wars will start again. After all people are people. ;)

Not everyone has endless supplies of rep like you Adam ;)

I don't mind so much when the reds are unsigned from people with little rep behind them. I assume they fear retribution and rightly so in some cases. But when one of the heavy hitters drops one with no signature it’s pretty frustrating, especially if it do to something that could actually be discussed for learning purposes or do to something in the steam vent. I guess I just exepect more honor out those with a lot of rep.

But it is what is and you just have to roll with it.

I won't lie - it feels good to be near the top of the list. :D Endless supply, though? Not quite. The admins just let us go around and play with our Monopoly money, but they can take it all away anytime that they want. :)

Just a note, everyone who's posted in this thread so far has the maximum possible reputation showing next to their name. Unless people check the rep list, we all look alike, right? So, unless someone drops below 2000 points, they look like everyone else on the first three or so pages of the list.

With that, perhaps AH should follow suit with the Macrumors forum. Macrumors removed the ability to sort on their member list because people were focused too much on who had the most posts or who had the most rep. I think it's fun to see, so hopefully AH will keep it, but it's just an idea that might keep people from getting too frustrated about this stuff.

Reputation points, like money, don't guarantee character traits. Both can be gained in more than one way. ;)

For me, it's not about how a red will affect my overall points. Points come, points go. So, heavy hitter or newbie troll, it comes down to this for me - it's more about getting a red for something that, as you said, would be better dealt with in a discussion. I think that was an excellent point - let's discuss things to try to come to a better understanding of one another. That could be a technical issue, or anything else. I figure that other people are just like me in that, if you get a red for something, you very well might not have any idea why. You might think that you posted something helpful, but then someone indicates without explanation that they disagree. I, for one, really appreciate the explanation so that I can understand.

But it is what is and you just have to roll with it.
Excellent advice, my friend. Excellent advice. It's tough sometimes, as red chicklets can feel like a drive-by or like someone graffitied your house, but it's the best approach.

Yeah it's not nice being accused of crimes you didn't commit in open forum or even in PM. I always doubt a red from any card carrying member. Usually they beat you in the reply not in the negative rep. Who cares anyway. It's not like your rep isn't high enough.:p:D

This should go in the site feedback area or steam vent not the general av discussions.:D Just realize Alex had 30,000 rep points and you will never catch him unless he stop posting. Everyone loves the class monkey. :D

I do agree with some of this; at times the anonymous reds feel a bit like a 'drive by.'

I'd hate to see the Mods with another job to do, One that would be akin to babysitting.:)

Sometimes I wonder if the powers that be, simply see the anonymous reds as a way for members to self govern the forum a bit?

Red Rep Disscussion Etiquette

From here on in it should be a rule that you have to disclose what was said in the comment portion of anonymous red rep when you cry about it openly because I find it to be hilarious. I love these threads. :)

Speak for yourself: I got something like -4000 in points from 1 high-rep member who decided he didn't like my politics.

And worse (at least, it speaks even lower of the quality of the person involved), they just wandered off to other non-politic threads to neg-rep me for said politics.

In the end, the only reason I even sort-of care (because it was tempting to start some political threads and run for "lowest rep on board" (without actually trolling / baiting)) is because, back in the rest of the board, you may spend some effort trying to help some n00b who takes one look at the red and ignores it.

That said: I'm surprised this thread hasn't been killed yet.

I can't imagine the hit a red from you would give. It might send me back to dark ages. In fact that should be your red comment.

Go back to the dark ages.

You will never be first in negative rep. A certain member of old is the king of that.

The last two I received went like this:

1. "Stay away from Adam, he's mine!"

and

2. "Stay away from Alex, or you'll never play Twister again!"

I'm talking about the red-repping lovers quarrel - not last Friday night. :p :D

How sagacious…:p

That’s really the crux of the matter. I am by no means an expert in any field of this hobby and it has nothing to do with my profession or formal education, but that doesn’t mean I am a dunce either. I have spent countless hours trying to teach myself everything which is within my mental grasp, and a lot of effort has been made to filter out all of the BS that gets floated in this hobby. So when I opine or give advice it’s merely based on this self taught knowledge base, but I am aware that there is a technical limitation to this knowledge.

So if I am wrong, I want to know, but what I really want to know is the why and how, so that I can improve my understanding for future use. It’s these types of exchanges that improve everyone’s understanding in the forum.

As you put it, I don’t want a drive-by just saying: you’re wrong!

Dang, man. I had to look up two words that time.

Impressive vocabulary. Much better than mine. I should start using a thesaurus to appear smart or something.
