Receiver warmth and matching

Hi all,

Have come across the occasional mentioning of the term, "receiver warmth" (and I don't mean temperature), when applied to matching with particular speakers. Based upon lots of research, (a lot of it done on this site), I have just purchased a Yamaha RX-V2500 (still waiting for it to arrive), and I was wondering what experiences anyone has in relation to the "warmth" of this unit. I am also very seriously considering putting Axiom M3 or M22's with it, and an Axiom sub. Any info you folks might be able to provide would be great. Muy Thankyou's

Jim

Yamahas are generally considered bright, and I feel the Axioms are bright as well, so it may not be an ideal combination, but the newer Yamahas seem to be tending toward neutral these days though. You already have Yamaha with Klipsch though, so I'd say it would be a step DOWN in terms of brightness.

Yamaha and Klipsch

Thanks for the reply. Do I understand you correctly, in that you are saying the current combo of the Yamaha and Klipsch are considered "very" bright, while the pairing of the new Yamaha and Axioms would be less so?

That's what I'm saying. As far as bright goes, a Yammie + Klipsch combo would generally be a medal contender. Axioms are definitely not going to be as bright as Klipsch.

Yamaha Review

Scientific reviews like the one from Audioholics have found your Yamaha to have a very neutral pre-amp and amp stage. By neutral I mean that it properly reproduces the entire audio bandwith without coloring or changing the sound. In comparison, the "Tube AMP Sound" is considered "warmer" due to the rolled off highs produced by this type of amplifier. If you want to alter the sound, the Yamaha can do this also with its EQ functions.

For speakers, the Axioms are a good pick. For mains, the M22ti's or M60s would be a good choice for your Yamaha. For an Axiom sub, I would save up for the EP-500. For a lower budget, check out the options from SVS and HSU.

P.S. Vinnoman, if you have a few glasses of red while listening to your Yamaha then you can achieve the "warmer" sound.

One only needs to look at the frequency response of the amp in question. In this case, this amp is very flat where it counts, hence it cannot be anything but neutral and transparent. Mythology is no stranger in the audio hobby :D
The speaker and the acoustic environment is what you hear, along with the quality of the recording. Wmax has discussed that many Cds are rather poorly mastered to please a group, and audiophiles were excluded:D

i have klipsch speakers (rf-7 & rf-5) and the sound quality is particularly dependent on what components they are connected to. i have not tried yamaha at home, but did listen to a 2600 w/ rf-7 speakers for about 20 min. and it did not sound bright at all. rotel stereo pre-pro & 1080 amp & nakamichi PA-5 II & CA-5 II were far too bright with my speakers, to the point that the nak demo lasted only a day. running the rotel amp & the nak amp through my denon 2805 improved the sound somewhat. this is not to knock either company, i have heard rotel sound good w/ B&K speakers & i heard the nak gear w/ thiel speakers which sounded fine. just not a good fit with my speakers. cary audio, B&K, krell and denon have all been through my system & none of them sounded bright. have also heard aragon pre-pro & 3000 series amp which was not bright when paired with rf-7. i love my speakers, particularly for what i paid for them, but paired with the wrong components they can sound downright awful.
