For $600 I'd go with Onkyo in a heartbeat. The only Denons available at that price range are severely lacking in current generation features. You can pick up an Onkyo 705 for about $600(maybe a bit more) and have access to the new hi-def audio standards available via Blu-Ray or HD-DVD if you believe either of those formats will be in your future. Later, if you decide you need more power, you can purchase a stand-along amplifier to power 2 or 3 of the front channels.

What are the make and model of your speakers, the wattage tells us absolutely nothing about your speakers.

im lookin for something with more power than my yamaha htr 5940 its rated at 100 watts a channel but it kinda blows

How large is your room, how are your speakers setup. I seriously doubt the receiver is the source of the "blowing".

What subwoofer do you have? What do you feel is lacking SQ wise in your system?

there in a 5.1 set up i run them without the sub unless im watching a movie,
plus my towers have plenty of bass. they are in a small room now but they will be in a very large living room shortly and im lookin to the future.
the receiver doesnt blow it will get loud but i know there are better out there that will have better and louder sound, the yamy just doesnt seem that powerful so i think a onkyo with 75 watts might be louder do to a better built in amp than my 100 watt htr 5940. the speakers sound great.
i also have a dayto apa 150 watt amp but its not hooked up and i currently have on ebay so pm me if your interested good price brand new . used to run my towers but it seems like everything eles is quiet in comparison

for a sub i have a HF 12 soon to be a HF 15 reference
i dont feel that anything is realy lacking im happy with the speakers but i kno they are not reaching there full potential and this bothers me
i have thought about buying separates like the emotiva lmc and the lpa but it would be cheaper to get a new receiver

my center and rears can give me the highs i want but not with the yamy. i know this because i had each hooked up to the apa 150 watt amp 75 x 2 channels and the highs were perfect so i need something that will power them a lil better maybe i should just go with emotiva seperates

Getting a different receiver isn't going to change how the "highs" sound on your speakers. Would your speakers benefit from a better receiver, possibly, but I think you have more to gain from either upgrading your speakers are addressing room accoustics. If you like lots of highs, maybe you should look at BIC or Klipsch, they have it in spades.

actually the apa 150 really increased the highs on all the speakers so a more powerful amplifer will increase the power of the tweeters and everything eles therefor a more powerful receiver will increase the highs and i just now upgraded my speakers and they sound great just need more power to them soooo onkyo 705 or denon or seperates thats all im looking for ... i cant hang the acustic stuff because its in the living room and im not looking to do that just need more power dude

I agree with Ticks77. I have a Yammy 5760, and when I use the pre-out with my 75x2 @ 8ohm amp, it sounds much cleaner, and the high's sound better. lol actually everything sounds better, high's, mid's, and low's.

What I would do is, get one of the following receivers, and see how it sounds:
Denon:
AVR-2808CI ~$799
Onkyo
TX-SR805 ~$700
TX-SR705 ~$600
Pioneer:
VSX-1018TXH-K ~$599 MSRP

If it is still lacking either buy new speakers, or buy a external amp, and use the receivers pre-outs.

Or I guess, you could just go to ebay, buy a $100 pro amp and use your existing receiver. Some of those amps though have loud fan's, you'd have to do a little research.

That Pioneer won't be available for a while now, and I can't recommend the VSX-1016 because it won't handle HD audio over HDMI.

If you really feel you need more power, go with the Onkyo TX-SR805. It will power most anything, and it will easily drive your Athenas.

True, Last I heard, the Pioneer VSX-1018TXH-K won't be available until May/June 08. No time line was specified within the thread. So I figured going 4-5 months out would be acceptable. Though, now that I think about it, it's bad to recommend a product that hasn't been reviewed or released. But damn..the idea/thought of that Pioneer is awesome.

Also, it'd give him time to do more research, and look into the other receivers.

I suppose if it had to be purchased today, I'd remove the Pioneer, and choose one of these 3 depending on reviews and specs.

What are you upgrading from? Is it more features you are after? If not, you may be disappointed (not much difference in sound quality between receivers these days, and more power is only a benefit in the unlikely event that you are using all the power you have now.)
