Hi all- I bought a Yamaha HTR-5830 receiver w/ a surround sound system. The problem the the front two speakers. The center and surround sound speakers work. When i put the speaker cable into where the front speakers go and turn my receiver on, i think it shorts everytime because its just shutting off. But im sure that the wires are not touching, and im really not sure as to what i am doing wrong. Ive even tried switching types of speaker wires, to no avail. Im not sure why my receiver keeps shutting off, any help would be much appretiated.

Try hooking up the surrounds to the fronts...if it works then the problem is with the speakers (might be a disconnected speaker lead), if it still shuts off then it might be the receiver.

Yea i did that with one of the surround speakers and it still shut off, but the problem is i still kind of think it is something i am doing. This is the first time ive set up audio like this and im still unsure its the hardware. According the the directions and what ive read i stick the unsheathed speaker wire into the side of the little screw thing and twist it so its tight, but that does not work.....

EDIT- No it does not shut off when nothing is connected, i can have the two surround, speaker, sub playing a movie fine without it shutting off.

Hmm...it sounds like you have some issues in the amp sections for the front speakers. That sucks. Since I haven't had to deal with an issue like that, I wouldn't know where to take it to get it fixed. Of course, I could be wrong.

The bare wires from the + &- must not touch each other when connected to the amp. It sounds like this is happening and it is causing the autoprotect to come on.

I've got a silly suggestion or two. Please note I'm just trying to be helpful but I'm next to useless when it comes to this trouble shooting stuff..

You are running positive to positive and negative to negative right?
Have you written Yamaha and asked them yet? They have great customer support and are really the experts on this product.
What speakers are you using?

This really sounds like an amp/receiver problem to me. Even running negative to positive should not cause protection mode to be enabled but it's a starting point.

Yes im running + to +, - to -.

I dont think this is happening? THe +, - sides arnt near eachother(they are closer together on the ones that work), they are not touching.

Im using the speakers that came with the system.

have u tried different speakers other than ur front L/R in those speaker terminals, maybe bad speakers? or maybe u just have a defective unit and there is a short inside the actual receiver that has to do with only the front L/R speakers

.....yep, considering a different speaker brought the same result....the only thing I might suggest goes along with Mac....strip the ends of the speaker wires only about 1/4 inch, and make sure no individual strands are extending further....the brand of speaker wire I use has 417 individual strands, and I have to put on fairly strong reading glasses to see an individual strand sticking out....

.....Artisian, if you've just recently purchased this system from BB, don't they have at least a 30 day return policy?....even if you're a few days over that, they should want to correct a defective receiver....talk to them, you might be surprised....they shouldn't lose one nickel to replace and return a defective product to Yamaha....tell them you'll picket their store-front main doors holding a BIG sign, haha.....

Im going to have someone (who knows what they're doing :) ) come look at before i call/return to best buy.

But- look at http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/images/products/7034/7034675_ba.jpg
The front speaker terminals are fairly far apart and once i screw in the cap with the speaker in the hole there really isnt any of the strands other than a couple and they arent very far away from the terminal at all, so i dont know.

Any more ideas or suggestions will be appretiated, but thank you for your help to all who did.

it could be an internal problem that has nothing to do with how you are wiring the system, u may have just been one of the unlucky ones that gets something defective. Thats why products are warrantied by the manf. It sucks, but it happens
