Hey ya'll,
Been browsin' through here for a while now. Just decided to join.
I have a question. Is there a receiver that can take component, composite, and HDMI and then output the video signal through only the HDMI cable?
Reason I ask, is I have a projector up in my ceiling, and would really like to only run one HDMI cable to it for all of my other pieces of equipment, i.e. DVD player, PS2, Xbox etc, cable box..etc... My DVD Player (pre-HD) is component, my PS2 is component, xbox is composite, and cable box is HDMI. Any suggestions? Looking to only spend 1k total for receiver and speakers..but will move up in price if necessary! Thanks for any input! :)

You can get some up-conversion from 480 to 720 or 1080 but not from composite or component.

With the configuration you describe you are going to have to run multiple outputs to your projector.

You can use a few different receivers for this, the least expensive of which would be the Yamaha RX-V663 at about $500 or less. Although this unit will not upscale any of the video (except 480i to 480p) it will take any input from any source and output it through a single HDMI cable. You can go with this or spend more, but with wanting to get speakers and the receiver for under $1k, this is probably your best bet. Hope this helps.

Mike

PS. A suggestion that is thrown around here a lot is get the receiver and start with a decent pair of front speakers and save up til you can get the rest of the surround system.

Many receivers will transcode the signal from composite, s-video and component to HDMI. Even my older Denon AVR-2307 will transcode the signals but it will not do any scaling or deinterlacing.

I venture to say that every receiver in your price range from Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, etc. will fulfill the analog to HDMI conversion. The question you need to answer is what kind of scaling you need. Do you need composite scaled to 1080p over HDMI? The Denon AVR-888 will get you there for $750.

Edit, just noticed that the budget is $1,000 for receiver AND speakers. That makes all but the most basic analog to HDMI conversion budget friendly. The Yamaha 663 mentioned above is probably your best choice in this range.

Well budget is all relative...it's just a matter of what I can talk my wife into. ;) I'll probably end up taking your suggestion and buying the most basic of setups for now, and then upgrade in the future. I don't really need any upscaling to 1080p. You can't really polish a turd, is the old saying. I wasn't sure if all/any of the receivers would do this. I was talking to a best buy guy (I know, I know) and he said that only 1 in stock would do what I was asking....this seemed a little far fetched to me. I appreciate all the feedback though. Speedy too. Thanks.

I actually only need it scaled to 720p. I am looking at between 0-$500 for the receiver. should I give the Yamaha RX-V663 a whirl??

Can the projector handle the scaling? Even receivers that can scale, sometimes will not do as good of job as the display. Convenience that deters from quality can be self defeating. Cat5 balauns can simplify cable runs also. Adding an external scaler would also be an option.

Just a thought: Consider the cost of running multiple cables to the projector when you look into the receiver. It certainly might justify spending an extra $100 (or more depending on how far you need to run those cables) on the receiver to get that single-cable-to-the-projector capability that your looking for. The cost of the cables is one thing, but there's also installation and your sanity.

Ty for the replies...Yes my projector will scale. Anything from 480i on up. Will be looking into this shortly. Anyone seen Seth=L lately?

I too will recommend the Yamaha RX-V663 for a receiver. You can piece together a sound system over time buy dedicating the remainder of your audio budget toward one set of stereo speakers. Later, as your budget allows, you may add more speakers (subwoofer, center, surrounds) to complete your home theater system.

Sorry buddy, I am at work.;) You know how it is.

I need final words either Denon AVR-888 or Yamaha rxv-663.

Both price is same this week at Fry's. ( 449$ and 499$).

I am buying first time and not much experience with HT.

My main purpose it to watch DVD Movies with my regular DVD player which has 1080P HDMI output.

Please suggest me today before sell ends .

Thanks in advance

I'd go with the Yamaha personally between the two but keep in mind neither one I dont believe will pass audio threw your HDMI, so basically you'll have to run separate audio cables. Also they wont up convert to 1080p only pass threw the signal given, to the best of my knowledge which is limited .

I think the consensus here is the Yamaha 663. It has HDMI 1.3 so it should be a single cable connection to the receiver and a single HDMI cable to the projector. Since your projector can do the scaling, you should be set. If you have any other concerns about the 663, I suggest you read the review here on Audioholics. They seemed pretty impressed with the receiver for this price point.
