Hi Everyone,

Pretty confusing title, but i have a lot of questions and am a newbie.

My Onkyo NR-515 receiver shut-down unexpectedly and started to smell like burnt plastic and now will not turn on. Back-story is that it was connected to 1 speaker (centre-right) for about 2 weeks after i had to unplug (unplugged at the speaker and not at the receviver) the other 2 speakers (centre-right and centre speaker), as my 10 month kept pulling/ripping the leads out and jolting the centre speaker.

I was thinking of sending the receiver to a repairer until i spotted an Onkyo NR747 for a good deal. Some more info: my wife would like to go wireless as its more convenient and safer. Questions i have are:

- What may have caused the burn-out? Having only 1 speaker plugged in and wires still connected to the amp for the other 2?
- Is the NR747 a good receiver?
- If i wanted to connect a receiver to wireless speakers, does the receiver just need to have blu-tooth and/or wifi and would nr747 be sufficient to connect? Havent purchased the wireless speakers, so any suggestions are welcome.

My set up is:
Receiver: Onkyo NR515AE
Left and Right speaker: KEF Q300
Centre Speaker Klipsch Quintet
Sub-Woofer Klipsch 10 inch
Usage Music is the focus. Rock, pop, Indie.

THANK YOU!

Most likely there was a short in the speaker lead. This does serious damage. Wireless is not a good solution due to latency issues.

Did you run two centers and nothing else ??
Possibly the + and - of your unused wires touched too long frying the amp maybe ?
It may cost more to repair then buy a new amplifier but I guess you could ask cost of fixing . But Onkyo is like going bankrupt or something not sure they can help ..

I’ve never fried a receiver... but it happens

4 ohm speakers can kill some amplifiers too .
