Receiver Small vs Large Settings ?

Hi, I have the Athena Point 5 MK II Surround with Yamaha Receiver HTR-5850 and a Energy S8.3 subwoofer.

My questions are:

1) Is it better to set all the speakers (4 bookshelf speakers with 4" woofers plus 1 center channel with two 4" ) to Large on the receiver instead of Small ?

The speakers manual says its better to set all the speaker to Large, but I´ve read that its better to set all the speakers to Small to redirect all bass signals to the Subwoofer and to save receiver´s power amplifier.

2) I can setup the crossover on the receiver to 80-100hz to blend the speaker´s bass output (80hz) with the subwoofer, so I really do not understand what is the difference between Large and Small speaker settings, does it matter ?

Thanks!!

1. You did the right thing.

2. When set to large, the receiver routes bass to all the speakers. Not the right thing to do.

80hz maybe too much for your 4 inch woofers. Actually I know it is. Set all speakers to small, select 100hz crossover in your receiver, or maybe even 120 if you have it, and then set your sub to its highest crossover setting as to be out of the way of your receivers crossover setting. 100 or 120 should give you clearer and higher spl's.

Large vs Small Settings

Thanks for helping, but I do not understand what is the difference between Large and Small setting if I setup the crossover to 100hz ?

Large - Full frequency/signal goes to all speakers set to Large, LFE goes to Sub.

Small - All frequency above the crossover setting goes to all speakers set to Small, all that below goes to the Sub with the LFE.

With few exceptions (Speakers that will go 20Hz to 20Khz) Small is the way to go.
