Receiver size problem

Just updated kitchen and had kitchen and neighboring living room wired with in ceiling speakers. I had planned on putting a receiver in a cabinet in the kitchen, but when the cabinet came the depth was only 10" and my receiver is at least 14" (d'oh!). Checking around, it appears that the smallest depth for a receiver for what I need (2 rooms with a pair of speakers in each room) is a little over 12".
Height isn't an issue - is there a receiver out there with max depth 8-9"? Any other ideas?

take a look at the Parasound Z series. They are very small in size and also relatively high quality. Although they are not the cheapest thing out.

The Parasound Zamp is an increidble product. Durable, 2 ohm stable so you can run a cascade of like, outdoor speakers on it or something. Just an animal of an amp. Unfortunately, it's 10" deep which won't fit for the OP.

OP.... Do you need the input switching, multiple inputs, and tuner of a receiver? or, is this something where you're plugging an iPod into it and just need it to output the sound?

Yes

Multiple inputs.

Parasound seems like a great product, but a little out of my price range.

There are quite a few little amplifiers and receivers on the market, though they do tend to be a little harder to find than "standard" sized units. Here is a small receiver that might be what you want:

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=302-150

On the other hand, if you really are serious about the tuner section, and if you have room for an amplifier and a tuner, you might want this:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-XDRF1HD-HD-Radio-Tuner/dp/B00168Q248/

You can read about it at a variety of sites:

http://theaudiocritic.com/plog/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=35

http://ham-radio.com/k6sti/xdr-f1hd.htm

However, it does run warm, so you would want the cabinet open when it is in use.

At these links you can look at a bunch of different amplifiers, many of which are small enough, but many of which are not:

http://www.mcmelectronics.com/search.aspx?C=0000000047

They also vary considerably in features, so look carefully before buying.

Thank you

All very much!

I'm sure I'll be able to find some option with your suggestions.

That Audio critic review is nonsense.

The tuner always to defaults to HD if there is an HD signal present.

That IBOC system is awful. The engineers at MPR are really upset with it. They tell me that for all practical purposes you have to stream at 40 kbs.

I have one of those units. I bought it to evaluate HD before I had my Marantz pre pro.

So if someone wants that unit make an offer. You are welcome.

I can tall you it sounds nothing like my Quad FM 4. So that audio critic is cloth eared.
