Hello. I am very new to the site and have found some
very good advice here. My wife and I are moving into a new home wondering if folks on the
board could give us some direction regarding a
purchase..
I am setting up a home theatre system in a room that
is approx 12x24.
The system I am looking at is the following:
SONY 46 inch XBR5 LCD HDTV
Yamaha RX-V663 Receiver
Mirage NANOSAT 5.1 Speaker System with Sub

I will be hooking a verizon fios cable box up to the Yamaha and
a SONY PlayStation 3, Possibly an X360 as well.

Will the home theatre package I mentioned above be
suitable?
Are there any red lights I should know about or
additional accessories I might need?

Thanks very much.

-Rick

In the case of speakers, it is a good idea to audition as many as one can stand to listen to, and then buy the ones that one likes best (within one's price range, of course). If those are the ones you like best, then those are the ones you should buy. As for the Yamaha, I think that would be hard to beat at its price point. I have no particular opinion about that TV, but I have seen some nice looking Sony LCD TVs. The PS3 is often regarded as a good Blu-Ray player. So, no, I don't think there are any "red lights" in your selection.

The only hesitation I had when reading your proposed setup would be the speakers and sub for the room. While there's nothing wrong with Mirage's speakers in general, the nanosat set and sub are rather small for that size of room.

I assume you've chosen this set for aesthetics and it's WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor). If that's the case, are you open to suggestions other than cube sized speakers? Even small form factor bookshelfs should provide better performance than cubes. If not, are in-wall speakers an option as an alternative to the nanosats?

Also, the sub with this setup will be underpowered in a room of that size. Besides the questions above, if you have a budget you'd like to stay within, I can provide some options other that what you've listed.

Other than that, your other components should suit you nicely... -TD

HT room

I would also recommend larger speakers for the HT room. Since this is a dedicated room, the new Emotiva speakers or something similar might work well. They run about $1k for the 5.0 speakers and budget another $500+ for the sub.

For the display, does the the room have good light control? You might consider a 1080p front projector ($2k+) and a 100-110" fixed screen (about $700). The cost might be comparable to the sony set and you will get a real HT experience.

Go with the X, as in X-Statik, X-voce and the MFW 15 from AV123. If the X-voce is to large for your room then go with the X-CS.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I really appreciate it.
The HT room actually connects to another area of the house.
So the viewing space is more like a rectangular 12x16 area.
My wife is strongly adverse to very large speakers so I thought the Mirage Nanosat's would be a good solution. I will take a look at some of the others speakers mentioned and report back.
Can anyone advise a good place to buy the HDMI 1.3 cables? Will I need to purchase additional speaker wire? I am planning to run the speaker wire behind the walls, so non-exposed. Thanks

One of the best cable and wire resources are Monoprice.com. They build quality products at very inexpensive prices... -TD

Forgot to ask, what is the budget your working with? It will help in suggesting speakers that will perform as well as pass the WAF... :) -TD

quick update:
pulled the trigger on the Mirage Nanosat 5 Prestige Bundle and went with a Definitive Technology Pro-Sub 1000
