hi, i have a general question regarding hd av receivers.

If i have a blue ray dvd player, it outputs dolby hd audio or what ever the latest hd audio formats are, which are encoded on say a blue ray dvd.

If my receiver is only dolby digital 5.1 capable will the audio be down scaled to the 5.1 digital audio format we all know and love ??

Just looking at what receiver to get next

Blu-ray discs that have HD audio formats also have the regular Dolby or DTS compressed tracks on them (in addition to PCM). If your receiver can only process the compressed tracks, then that is what will be used.

Receiver options

Receivers that do HDMI audio processing start in the $400-500 range and all of them are 7.1. If your speaker system is limited to 5.1, you wont lose any information, you just wont have a descrete audio track for the surround back channels.
