receiver ps3 compatability

Just purchased a PS3 today, Best Buy got a few in and got lucky. Curious about the audio output. I tried watching the free blue ray disk and the receiver kept switching to multi channel pcm. Is that a step up from Dolby or DST?
My receiver is a Onkyo tx-sr604, and says it supports all the latest audio formats, or most anyway. It says it is 192/24 compatible, so is this pcm output the one i should be expecting, or should I get something else.

Any help is much appreciated.

No receiver can currently decode the new Dolby and DTS audio formats used on HD-DVD or BluRay discs so the player performs the decoding to multi-channel PCM and outputs over the 5.1 analog outs.

no it isn't compatible, while any receiver that had HDMI can input/output 1080p, none of the receivers can input/output the dolby hd or dolby digital plus so your stuck with analog inputs.

Dolby digital plus may be possible via PCM, which HDMI supports- pulse code modulation which is like the raw sounds similar to a wav file. HDMI since 2002 has supported 1080p and dolby and dts surround sound formats as well as 8 channels of uncompressed audio.

However, you need an HDMI 1.3 reciever to get the new high-def PS3 sound. I am not sure if the games will utilize these codecs.

Wait a sec, so you're saying that if you feed your DTS/Dolby Digital receiver the PS3 sound via the optical connections or HDMI, your receiver is not able to produce Dolby digital or DTS when playing a game? This is new info for me...

Err... NO. That's not what's been discussed here. All that has been mentioned here is that the PS3 can can out put advanced sound formats AS WELL as all the usual formats. When a HDMI 1.3 capable a/v unit comes out as well as titles encoded with the advanced sound formats the PS3 will be there willing and waiting.:)

Actually, you just need to switch the PS3 over to bitstream I believe. Then you should be ok

I wouldn't hold my breath that PS3 will even use those hi res formats. Even if they are designed to, it won't be anytime soon.

PS3 Denon AVR 5805 1080P issues

I have another issue and am hoping someone on here may have a solution.

I bought the PS3 primarily for the 1080P (Blu ray functionality) but am having 'hand shake' issues (grainy screen, flickering) when I put it to 1080P through my reciever (Denon AVR 5805). When I connect the PS3 directly to the TV it works fine (but I lose the audio improvement).

Anyone have any ideas?
