I currently have an older Yamaha (rx-v795a) receiver mated w/ a Parasound amp (hca 855a). Just for fun, I built the tube preamp from Bottlehead (foreplay) and *wow* did that sound good. Unfortunately, it made me keenly aware of how average the pre stage was on my receiver. If I had the shelf space, I would build a processor loop on the Foreplay and move on. However, there's a great deal of crawling around involved to hook up the foreplay, and I'd rather have better sound for music from the receiver (and build a second tube system for another room). Are there some things to look for that help determine what receivers will have a good pre amp stage? Only a few dealers will allow home audition, and those are usually for the more expensive brands.
Thanks for any help provided.
