Is there any way to increase a receiver's power via an external power amp? Would this increase a receiver's over all power or just power to certain speakers?

If you add an external amp, it would have no effect on the receiver's power output, but would add more power to the speakers than what the receiver is givinig it.

Does that mean that I would have to run certain speakers directly from the additional amp that I have added? I Have an old yamaha mx500 that is just collecting dust. I would loave to be able to use it.

Connecting a power amplifier to the receiver is like using a power amplifier with a preamplifier. The receiver's power is no longer used for the channels of amplification you have added. The power of the amplifier is solely dependant on the amplifier itself.

A receiver is a pre/pro and amplifier combined into one. If you purchase a 5 channel amplifier for a 5 channel system the seperate amplifier does all the work and the amplifier inside the receiver no longer influences your power.

Using the RX-V2500's preouts you can connect the Amplifier to the Front Left/Right RCA preout terminals to the Amplifier's line level inputs (also RCA connectors). You then use the speaker level outputs on the amplifier to power the speakers. You will no longer be using the Front left/right speaker level outputs on the receiver. This will more than likely result in higher power.

That is correct, you hook up the speakers directly to the amp, and use your old receiver's pre amp outputs to connect to your inputs on the amp.
