I have a Sony STR DE835 receiver that is several years old. Today I was watching TV and it made a loud pop. There was a flash of light from the top of the unit. It seems like something inside of it blew out. I didn't notice any change in the sound when it happened. I have had it turned off since it happened now. Is my receiver going to be toast the next time I turn it on?

"Is my receiver going to be toast the next time I turn it on?"

That depends on what popped. Sounds like it might work but don't kid yourself. Something is drasticaly wrong with it.

Well, I ran it for 2 hours this morning and it seems to be working fine. I guess something overheated in there and blew out. I don't know what could fail without it causing the receiver to not work.

My guess is that a capacitor popped because that's how they tend to break-down. Hopefully it was just a small filter capacitor which would (in the worst case scenario) degrade sound quality a tiny bit.
