Receiver not working

Hi All,

I have a HK 3485 2.1 ch stereo receiver. I purchased it about 8 months ago, maybe about 50hrs on it. I use this for music only. I hooked the speakers up and there was no sound coming from the left speaker  I then hooked one of the polks to it, figuring it was the other (old DCM) speaker, again no sound. Tried the speaker 2 inputs, no sound from the left either. I had also tried different speaker wire.
So, no sound from left speaker inputs 1 & 2. I haven't opened it up yet to take a look, don't know what I'd be looking for:confused: Any ideas on what is going on? Just odd that it is both left inputs.
Any thoughts & advice is much appreciated ;)

Do you have an amp that you could hook the HK preamp output to?

Hi,
I don't have a separate amp. I have a Denon 2105 and an ancient HK AVR20, which is what I brought back to life to use when this one went kaput. The Denon is for my HT, but it's not all hooked up at the moment as I am in the process of moving the component shelving.

I've never used an amp and don't know anything about the pre-out/main-in connections on these:eek:

first off, did you try the FM with headphones?

If it does work with the headphones on FM, check your source connections.

Second, if you just bought it NIB from an authorized dealer it comes with a two year warranty. You shouldn't be taking it apart. That may void said warranty.

If it doesn't work with headphones on FM, get hold of the sales receipt, your manual, and find a H/K authorized repair facility in htere and give them a call.

A Preamp connects to the Amp which then powers the speakers.

A receiver has both a Preamp and the Amp inside.

If your HK receiver has the Preamp Output, then you can bypass the internal Amp.

If your Denon receiver has the 5.1 Analog Input, then you can use the internal amp.

So hook the HK Left Ch Output to Denon Left Ch (or Rt, C, etc.) Input, then hook the Left speaker to the coresponding Denon speaker post to test.

It is under warranty, which is also why I resisted the urge to take the cover off. If it wasn't I probably would have taken a peek, I wouldn't know what I was looking at but just to see what was in there....it's a bad habit, I know

As it turns out, I feel like a complete idiot now anyway
It does work w/ the headphones on FM. I never thought to try the radio before I changed to my old HK. I never listen to radio anymore with the TV music channels available.
Then I got a small pair of Bostons that I have, hooked those up and it works!! Now I'm completely discombobulated.
I was using the CD player w/ it when it happened. I didn't think after trying 2 sets of speakers and 2 sets of wires that it was anything but the receiver.
Maybe it was the connections on the CD player.....
I'm going to try everything again. I've been having a tendinitis issue w/ my hand and I'm cranky, so not thinking too clearly I guess......live and learn......
Thank you so much for the replies.....at least I know now it's just me that's not working properly :D

didn't you learn anything from "The Hitchicker's Guide to the Galaxy?

First rule, "Don't Panic".

Seriously, in most cases, if you logic it out, it's not as bad as you think.

This is good advice. I once spent 45 minutes trying to figure out why a printer wasn't printing only to find out it wasn't plugged in
