OK... so im hooking my stereo back up at school and i've got this sweet idea about hooking the receiver unit up behind the shelf, out of sight.. but to do this i have to stand the receiver on it's side.. is that ok? will it hurt anything or does it not make a difference?

Yes it does matter. The venting is designed for normal positioning with some room above and beside it for correct cooling. Not a good idea.

the vents will still have ample room for them to breath.. its not like i'm wedging it into a small area. the vents will still have air getting to them, im not worried about it getting hot, i didnt know if the components inside mattered, like if it would still work ok on its side...?

Yes, it is solid state gear, unlike a record player. Even a CD player will play on its side of maybe even inverted.:D
Ventilation is the key.
But, how will you operate it? Strictly remote?

remote and by computer, i have the receiver hooked up to my computer, so whatever i play on my computer will go through my receiver.. and volume wise i will just use the remote to turn it up or down and on/off.. i hooked it up yesterday and its pretty sick looking, it looks like its just speakers with the receiver hidden, it cleans it up alot...
