Receiver hookup.

I am planning to purchase a tv with very limited inputs. One set of composite and one set of S-video. I was planning to connect my receiver to the TV via s-video. If the receiver doesn't have s-video upconversion, would I still be able to display video signals from the receiver if I hook it up through composite?

Example:
1. I would have vcr hooked up to the receiver via composite.
2. The receiver is connected to the tv via s-video.

Would I be able to display the vcr through s-video if there's no upconversion to s-video? I understand that there won't be any video quality increase but would it display a picture at all?

No. If the receiver can't transcode composite video to s-video then there will be no signal at the TV input. If you have other devices that do have s-video outputs, you could use the s-video from them to the receiver and s-video from the receiver to the TV. If you then want to see the VCR, you could hook the composite video cable from the VCR to the receiver and run an additional composite video cable from the receiver's monitor out to the TV, but you would have to switch the input on the TV to view it.

Note that if the TV has only ONE video input that accepts either composite or S-Video then you will be out of luck because you can't connect two different video types to the one input on the TV. If that is the case, then your best bet is to just live with composite video for all devices - at least that way you retain the ability to use the receiver to switch between the source devices and not have to switch the TV input.
