Receiver Hook Up Question

I am in the process of installing a home theater system. However, others in the family will want to continue to use the TV as usual and not mess with turning on the receiver. Can anyone tell me what type of wiring is needed to allow the TV to continue to be controlled by the cable box without having to turn on the AV receiver/surround system?
Much appreciated.

Please list:
1) Cable company. ex: (Time Warner, Comcast, Dish Network, etc)
2) Cable box brand, type, and model. ex: (Scientific Atlanta, digital dvr, Explorer 8000)
3) Receiver brand/ model number. ex: (Yamaha RX-V1400)
4) Current connections used.
5) Availible cables on hand.
6) If you are willing to buy more cables if needed for proper hook-up, or if you wish to hook-up with the cables you have.

First leave it hooked up exaclty as you had it before the home theatre .

If your cable box has a digital sound output(optical/coax AC-3)hook it to the desired input on reciever. This will allow you to access the cable sound on the home theatre. leave analog outputs connected to t.v. for the others in house.

If you dont have a digital sound output on cable, run sound to t.v. as normally had done before and hook up your reciver to the red/white audio outputs on your t.v.

You may have a tv with no audio outputs.

If you want to use the tv to control the volume of the tv speakers and bypass the receiver completely, you just have to get the cable signal to the tv. Most, if not all, cable boxes have RF out so it is as simple as running the coax cable from the wall to the cable box and from the cable box to the tv.

If you want the cable box to control the volume, you need to run the analog cables from the cable box to the audio input on the tv. Set the cable box to variable audio out. If the tv has video in as well, then you can also run the video cable from the cable box to the tv OR use the RF cable as above.
