I am looking for a receiver for my parents. They r not audioholics. I am looking for the $300 range. Looking to drive a 5.1 and also want the receiver to be able to drive 2 outdoor speakers simultaneously w the 5.1.
I was thinking this one.

Pioneer VSX921K

Does this support a second zone? I believe it does but it just can't adjust the volume independently in zone 2 correct?

Can anyone recommend a receiver in the $300 range that will play 5.1 and a zone 2 simultaneously?

It is a refurbished model, but accessories for less has a terrific reputation. They are an A rated BBB business and an authorized dealer for all the brands that they sell. This means that their products come backed with a full manufacturers warranty and for a small extra fee you can purchase an extended warranty for peace of mind. I have read posts from other members who have purchased from them with excellent experiences, both with purchase and warranty experiences. It's not one of those sketchy places where you have to worry about paying a lower price or buying refurbished and are left wondering.

Just a thought, it gets you everything you want for your price range and for $50 you can tack in a 5 year extended warranty to the manufacturers 1 year.

Does anybody know if the vsx 921 can control volume in the 5.1 separate from the Outdoor speaker B terminals?

Heres the user manual.

If this if for your parents and they are not audioholics, or even interested in learning the ins and outs of this receiver I'd probably go with something else unless you are going to be there to help them. It isn't a bad receiver but pioneers, at least from my experience, are not the most user friendly receivers and they can be finicky.

Probably a more user friendly option, doesn't say whether you can do a simultaneous output between main zone and zone 2, at least that I could find in the manual.
