I am looking to update my receiver from an out of date Dolby ProLogic. I want to continue using my current speakers, which is where my questions arise.

I have:

2 front speakers - max 200w
2 rear speakers - max 60w
center speaker - max 90w
passive sub - i don't know

My current receiver has a built in amp for the sub, but the new receivers I look at do not. What are my options?

Also, I don't know how many total watts/watts per channel I should look for in a new receiver. Any guidance/suggestions, brands..etc... will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Budget?
Room Size?
What are your speakers?
You should probably get a powered sub if fiscally possible, depending on your current speakers.

Budget - I've been looking in the 2-300 dollar range, I can afford more, but why? I'm not trying to impress George Lucas here, I just want something to give me true surround sound that is not too weak (or too powerful??) for my speakers.

Room size - One bedroom apartment, so I would say small.

What are your speakers? - They are sony. The front speakers are 8" floor speakers, 3way, 8 ohm. The center and rear speakers are nothing special, they came with my stereo, 8ohm and I listed the wattage above. After looking on ebay I found that the subwoofer is 120w max.

That's all I know, if you don't have enough info to make a recommendation, no problem.

Thanks Again

IMO any Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo or Pioneer AV receiver that you can find in your price range will suffice for your needs. A fair number of folks on this site have had good luck with b stock and referbs found on Ubid.

Power for sub.

Add an inexpensive plate amp from parts express for the sub. You might also check for a refurbished AudioSource amp from ubid for use on the sub. If your passive sub is from a HTIB, then you are better off upgrading.
The $200 Onix X-sub from AV123.com is a good entry level option for your Apt. Also conside the X-LS speakers for your next upgrade.
