I'm a newbie so go easy on me, I just bought a Toshiba 62"hmx 85 and a Toshiba sd 4980 dvd player, they both have HDMI connections, and I know that they HDMI carry both signals. So how do I connect one or the other to my receiver? I have a Harmon kardon AVR 125. Can I just take the optical from the dvd player and hook it up the the receiver? Is it that simple? What if I use the l/r plugs out of thet tv and put them into the l/r plugs on the receiver, while the optical is in the receiver, will that wreck it? Also if I use the l/r plugs from the tv to the receiver will I loose my digital suround to the rears?

Audio over HDMI

Troyboy,
You are correct that the HDMI cable is capable of sending multi-channel audio along with the video signal. With your receiver, you could use the HDMI cable to connect directly to the TV to output 2 channel audio on your TV speakers.
The newest receivers in the $1500 range have HDMI switching and could pick up the digital audio signal off of the cable.
Since your HK receiver obviously does not have this feature, connect an optical or digital audio cable from the DVD to the receiver. No connections are necessary from the receiver to the TV. The speakers on the TV are likely inferior to your surround system.
For video from your satelite box or other sources, I would recommend using a component video cable and the switching capabilities of your receiver. Also use a digital audio cable if possible.

hook the dvd player to the tv with hdmi

hook an optical, or a coaxial audio cable from the dvd player to the receiver, into "dvd". that will allow you to watch dvd's in digital audio.

hook l/r rca cable from the tv to the "TV" input of your receiver. But, only if you want to watch cable and hear it through your speakers. It will not be in digital audio
