Receiver for Klipsch

I've decided to add surround sound to my HDTV. At first I had been hoping to buy one of those HTIB for about $600. I am not an audio junky and pretty much just want it to sound nice for movies.

So, I went to listen to some and decided they were (mostly) junk and settled on Klipsh reference RB-10 for the front and RC-10 for the center. I am thinking of putting the surrounds in the ceiling, but probably won't get the Klipsch (too expensive). I only plan on staying in my house about another 3 yrs, so I'll probably go with the $200 set (Definitive I think). I'm hoping they will be good enough for surrounds.

Anyway, my question is ... what is a reasonable receiver to use for this setup. I'd like to stay <$400, and all it needs to do is decode dolby digital 5.1 or wahtever it is that HD movies are broadcast in. I need one digital optical input and that is it.

What are your recommendations?

What can I say? Pioneer 1015Tx. Best value in that price catagory, by far.

Alright, I'll see if they have it in the store so I can hook it up and play with it.

What do you guys think of the surrounds? My thought is that they are mostly for swoosh .. swish ... whatever, so a reasonable in wall speaker $100 or so should be plenty. Is htis a fair thing to say?

EDIT: Another thought ... I'm a bit space constrained (I have to either build a shelf behind the TV or nock a whole int eh wall to build a shelf for this). Do you guys have equally good feelings about the 815?

100 for surrounds is pretty tight. To me the entire point of 5.1 is a surround effect and you won't achieve a good sound with a crappy set of surround speakers. it's best to keep the same name speakers all the way around especially if you want to play multi-channel music. Multichannel music just doesn't sound right on mixed speakers.

Probably more then you want to spend but....

You could also try the Axiom QS4's.

360 a pair, free shipping, you'll have them in 2 days, free 30 day money back trial. The factory outlet is not refurbished equipment. There "might" be a small scratch somewhere but I have yet to hear of someone getting a factory outlet speaker with defects on it. Mine are all from the FO and not a mark on them.

They come with a bracket for mounting flush on a wall. But the Full metal bracket (optional) is one of the best and flexible brackets I've seen for any speaker. Very strong, and very easy to mount on ceiling/wall, corner, you can angle in any direction.

Axiom is very good. Matter of fact, I'd take them over any Klipsch.

Their smallest speaker is still several inches larger than the RB-10 ... which is probably why it might sound better.

I suppose ifI build it is own ittle home in the wall between the fireplace and the TV, I could fit the 1015. But then, I have to worry about cooling both under normal conditions and with the fireplace on.

I KNOW I can fit the panny and onkyo digital receivers (<4" tall), but I'm not sure about the quality of those.

The Def Tech in-ceilings are an exceptional speaker for $200. Others that may be of interest: Polk, Paradigm, BIC Acoustech, Energy.

Alright, I tlaked to the guy at the store with the Klipsch speakers and they only stock the pioneer elite line. He thinks I should buy the Yamaha RV657 or 557. The 657 is a little more than I want ot spend, but I'm pretty sure I can whittle out a pretty good deal if I buy the whole package from them which may make up the difference.

For the backs, I think there is last years polk models listed at $200/pr at circuit city that I could probably get for a bit less. Ulitmate carries the definitive for $99/speaker. At that price, I have to start hinking about buying 3 since they are sold individually and build up a 6.1 system.

I've still got lots to figure out, but I think I am narrowing in on a solution. Thanks for the help so far!

Yamaha HTR-5860

I am considering the Yamaha HTR-5860 for my own HT setup. It is a nearly identical model to the RX-V657 you listed above with a different front pannel and is distributed through mass market retailers and online.
Here is an authorized dealer selling it for <$340 shipped, well within your budget.

Since you are new to HT, the automatic setup and equilization will make it easy to integrate.

Well, I made my purchase.

Klipsch RB-10 Fronts
Klipsch RC-10 Center
Definitive Technology (basic model) 6 1/2" in ceiling rears
Yamaha RX-V657

They sold me the receiver for $430 which is less than the $450 the 1015 goes for in stores. I wanted to buy here in case I don't like it or have a problem with it. I would have gone for a more basic model, but I wanted the on-screen display so I went up to the 657. Total price was right about $1k including tax which is more than I wanted to spend originally, but I think I got a good setup for that money.

Now ... installation ... I'm excited, the wife is terrified :-D.

My next issue will be figuring out if my old DVD player is good enough (has component video and both kinds of digital outs but was made in 1997) or if I need to buy something new for the HDTV. But, that will probably be the subject of a new thread if I can't find it already discussed.
