My birthday was yesterday! 15! :)

I got:
KOSS MP3 Player from my grandma
$125 from my mom
$100 from my granny
$20 American from my grandad
yet to receive another $100 from my granny.

They all know that i want that receiver hehe!

Allright, I have two choices:

DENON AVR-1505
DENON AVR-1705

Those are the two I am leaning towards.

I can get the 1705 for $550 - even though on their site it is $620 list price - at this place called Audio Ark because they give discounts.

What are the differences between these two? Are they good? I plan on listening to music and watching alot of movies too.

Thanks,
Travis

wow, to be 15 again

Happy Bday. Where do you live? Canada? Those look like Canadian prices. Do you have speakers yet? We don't even have the 1505 here, but based on the Canadian website and specs, they look very similar. Boy, too bad you couldn't get it here in the states. I don't know what the exchange rate is, but it's probably still a few bucks less. Anyhow, buy what you really want because you don't want to be sorry after you get it home and wish you got the other one. No buyers remorse. Anticipation is almost better than the actual purchase. Have you had a chance to demo either one, or ask the sales guys if there was a difference?

Thanks :)

Canada, yes. I have speakers that I can use untill i have enough dough to upgrade those. I got to turn the 1505 on, but not listen to anything. I dont know about the menus. They seem confusing to me, But they both look like solid units imo. I didnt think to ask if there was a difference between the two because i was origionally going to go with the 1505 only. But i might get the 1705. I just need to know the differences.

I am only going with 6.1:

Cheaper
I dont think I will be able to use 8 speakers in my room properly.

I may also only use 5.1. Not that thats a bad thing, right?

All video conversion does is takes a signal, say, from a vcr, and upgrades that signal to the tv set with component grade video wires. Your yellow wire from your vcr goes into the receiver, then you'll have three wires -red/green/blue from the receiver to the tv set. The three wires are called component hook up - much better picture quality than yellow or composite, or even S-Video hookup. If you have a dvd player and vcr that don't have component jacks, you can run them to your new Denon and then run the component jacks to the tv assuming it has component inputs. That's all video conversion is, or more widely known as "upconversion."

5.1 uses two front speakers, two surrounds, a center, and a subwoofer (which is the .1) 6.1 adds a rear center, and 7.1 uses two rear centers (or a number of other possibilities including 5.1 in one room, and stereo in another room). As you go up the Denon line of receivers, you'll notice they get more expensive as they add more channels, moving up to the 10 channel 5805.

I see.

I knew all of the speaker formats allready, I was refering to the video upconversion. You gave a good explination :) thanks :)

With this receiver, there are plugs on the back, can i plug my DVD player and VCR into those?

I think I have figure out (in my mind, since i dont have the receiver yet ;)) a way to hook this monster of a system up...any suggestions..feel free to tell me...

Since my TV doesnt have composite/S-Video or component video in or out, I will hook my TV up through my VCR and the VCR to the Denon as follows:

1. Coaxial cable goes to wall
2. Other coaxial cable goes to TV
3. VIDEO IN goes to MONITOR OUT
4. VIDEO OUT goes to VCR IN on receiver
(are 3 and 4 the other way around though? this is one of the things i'm confused about.)
The DVD Player would be hooked up as follows:
5.AUDIO OUT on player would go to EXT. IN on receiver (right? is etx. in for 5.1?)
6. VIDEO OUT would go to DVD/DVP on receiver
7.Now...I don't know really, how a sattelite receiver works (ive never hooked one up0 but is it the same as the VCR except on a different input to the receiver? (This is assuming I will have one)
8. CD Player will go from AUDIO OUT to CD IN on receiver.

I think, the way I would have it set up is so that the VCR wuld have to be on VIDEO1 to view anything else (DVD, Satellite), then use the receiver as a switch.

Any suggestions?
