Receiver as amplifier

I have a Yamaha RX-V2095 receiver and Onkyo TX-810 receiver. I want to run the front main speaker pre-amp outputs of the Yammie into the Onkyo but the Onkyo only has analog inputs. The question is: are the impedances and voltage levels compatible between preamp inputs/outputs and analog inputs/outputs?

To my knowledge, this can't be done. Bad idea.

What is wrong with the front outputs on the Yamaha?

If you prefer the Onkyo, then use the Onkyo. I don't see what you are trying to accomplish.

Pre-amp inputs/outputs are analog.

Something is wrong with the right main channel in my yammie. All other channels seem to be fine so I thought I would try to bypass the yammie's power amp for the mains. Even if it did work I would probably have balance issues, but if it was doable without much risk I thought I would try.

There are some great bargains on receivers at the moment . Is that an option?

Long term that's what I'll probably do, but I paid a lot for that receiver and hate to just throw it away.
Thanks Zumbo

You should be able to connect the pre-outs of the Yamaha into any of the analog inputs of the Onkyo. You'll just have to select that input on the Onkyo to hear it; ie if you connect it to Tape, select the Tape input.

The problem will be with leveling the channels and controlling the volume. The Yamaha volume control will vary the volume going out the pre-outs but you'll have to find a fixed position of the Onkyo volume control that levels the front channels with the other channels being driven by the Yamaha and leave it there.

One repair facility told me it's not worth fixing. I have yet to check with others.:(

Depends on the cost. If the receiver has all the features you need at the moment, it may very well be worth a repair. But, new receivers with comparable specs don't cost as much as that one did.

A RX-V659 has equal power with more features and connection options, and can be found for around $350.

Several Yamaha HTR models with equal power and more features can be had from vanns at a cost of $250+. Enter Yamaha htr in the search.

Thanks MDS, I may give it a try with my rear speakers first at very low volumes. I'd be bummed if I blew my expensive main speakers.

I wouldn't try it. No disrespect to MDS, but it doesn't sound like a good idea. You may end up spending more than $250.

No offense taken. It can be done but I agree it is more hassle than it is worth given that you can buy a new receiver relatively inexpensively. Having to find the exact location for the volume control on the Onkyo is a hassle but I suppose it's really no different than finding the right position of the gain knob on an amplifier when you calibrate the system.

Don't Throw Out The Yamaha!

Please don't throw the Yamaha away, you could always sell it. You won't get much, but at least it will get you ahead to buy a new receiver like the Yamaha RX-V659. I think it would perform very well for your needs, and it is a really good deal.

Zumbo found the Yamaha HTR-5990 somewhere and it is loaded with features, it can be had for around $500 if you look in the right places. Zumbo probably has the link bookmarked.:D
