receiver adding noise to projector signal

Just finished intergrating a system for a client. was in process of putting the theater through its normal shake down test. Used a Sharp Blue Ray, Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver, Polk inwall sub with Polk inwall speakers, Mitsub HC4900 projector. Hdmi from projector to receiver, HDMI from player along with toslink for audio.

During low frequency passages in movie, specifically, things blowing up and the like, digital noise showed up at projector. Running HDMI directly to the projector eliminated the problem so signal is coming from receiver. I am switching the receiver out with another 605. anyone ever heard of this before? this is a new one on me.

I haven't heard of that before but I'm curious about why you would run Toslink along with HDMI. You can't take advantage of the high resolution audio formats available on Blu-Ray using Toslink.

Yes I'm confused too. What's the purpose of running TOSLINK if you're using HDMI? HDMI carries audio/video.

toslink

we always run a toslink, and a stero rca to the receiver in addition to the HDMI. This allows to program buttons on the owners remote to change audio inputs if there is ever an issue with compatiblity. we always get the call, "hey when i play this (?), i don't get any sound". saves us a trip to the house on superbowl sunday. We tell them to go to x page on the remote and hit x button, and wammo the toslink is now running the audio. we do use HDMI as a primary audio and video source.

thanks for the response. Had to use toslink as a substitute since hdmi from blueray goes right to projector now. will switch back to HDMI once new receiver comes in tomorrow.

Wow, you guys are good!!!!

You may also want to try it with the HDMI to receiver, and the other audio cables disconnected, just in case.
By the way, how does that digital noise manifests itself on the video?

manifested noise

The noise shows up as digital static running accross the screen. if a big low frequency passage is played that last more than a couple of seconds, the screen goes to white snow, the reistablish it self. weirdest thing. only during low frequencies. received the replacement receiver today. will probably integrate tomorrow or monday. will let you guys know.

I have had at least one install where having multiple audio cables connected instead of the "one" which is the desired input caused both audio and video interference. Disconnecting the unused inputs solved the problem.

It is hard to believe the Toslink would create that problem, since it is not electrical at all, but the HDMI ground and RCA ground wires certainly could create the problem if the problem is related to a ground loop between the receiver and the projector

thanks, I will definitely try that. I believe our tech unhooked everything and still got the noise. I have will isolate the blueray and test before added the additional equipment to verify where the noise is comming from if it is not the receiver.
