Rear Surrounds - mix & match?

I have 2 jbl studio speakers for my L&R surrounds. I'm adding a rear center channel in my new room and I was wondering if I can incorporate a small speaker of a different brand.

Reason I want to do this is because it will have to be ceiling mounted and the other 2 speakers are way too large to do this. I was going to get a center channel speaker to use for this, but after thinking about it, it'll be way to huge.

Is there any problem using a small speaker (such as a bose) for this rear center in conjunction with my 2 jbls?

I would lean towards timbrally matching the other speakers in your system if possible, which usually means at least using a speaker from the same manufacturer. Failing that, I'd try to pick a speaker that has similar specs to those already in your system (range, crossover and sensitivity). I'm not at all certain that I'd trot out to buy a Bose speaker for a rear surround, but if you found one for free it's worth hooking it up to see if you like it.

Bryan...did you look at Parts Express for flush mounts?...

if the back rears will be about 4 feet or so apart (counting the center) they definitely should be form the same manufacturer and model line. You really need several feet apart before the sound movement will smooth out from a timbre mismatch.

back speakers will be 5 foot apart.

I can't find squat to mount to my ceiling that will be small enough except for those small bose speakers, or an off-brand.

I can't find any info on the bose other than that it is compatible with 4-8 ohm recievers and up to 100 watt. No other specs.

Any ideas? Jbl doesn't seem to have anything I'm looking for except a set of surrounds i found for $30 (including center) on ebay! I want some decent quality. Something small.

Most people cannot tell if the surrounds & rear speakers are matched or not. Try using a $30 radioShack speaker.. if you like it, don't spend any more on it. I'm using old Kenwood HTiB surrounds with my paradigms and have never been able to hear any problems with it.
