Rear surround placement: which is correct?

There's this: http://www.dolby.com/consumer/home_entertainment/roomlayout2.html
and there's this: http://www.thx.com/home/setup/speakers/71.html.

This is the first time I've seen the thx idea of the rear surrounds being placed together. Does this setup have more credence than the dolby version?

If they're going to be placed together, why not just have a single centre speaker placed there? The woofers are on either end of the speaker, just like it would be with two bookshelf speakers. (Yeah, there'd be only one tweeter, I know. But still.)

Anyone try both? If so, which did you prefer?

cheers,

The THX recommendation is meant to be used with a THX certified receiver. As it says on the site: 'This allows the THX Advanced Speaker Array, or ASA technology to deliver its maximum effect.'

And that's why I need you guys: to remind me of the stuff I should've noticed to begin with!

Thanks, MDS.
