Rear surround delema

I own Qs8s and M3Tis. The entire left half of my listening area is open to the dining area of my home so whatever I decide, I must use a speaker stand for the left surround. For ascetics, and ease of setup, I would rather use the M3Tis as my side surrounds and the QS8s for the rears. Am I committing a sin by doing this? Someone suggested that I use the QS8s for the sides but I would rather not.

What do you folks think?

I don't see anything wrong with having the M3Ti's as side surrounds and the QS8s for the rears. In fact, though I'll freely admit that I may be wrong, I'd do exactly the same as what you are considering.

Was there a reason given for why that would not be as good as the alternative setup?

Regards

There was ... but it was some time ago and I can not recall what it was. Perhaps that the Qs8s are designed to be surround speakers ... bah I can not remember.

Thanks for the reply.

How difficult would it be for you to try it doing an A/B test? That's what I would do and then let your ears decide for you...

I suggest you use the QS8's as your side speakers as they are bipole/dipole style of surrounds. This way your ear cant tell the direction of sound and it creates a more eneveloping surround experience. The "problem" with using directional style side surrounds is you can easily tell where the rear content is coming from. The creation of bi-pole/di-pole rears eliminated this "problem".

However..as stated its really up to your ear. The side speakers are meant to be approx 3' above your head and about 2' behind you. That is the "optimal" way of having them. Obviously you intend on having a 7.1 setup. There is no true 7.1 content out yet and there is only true 6.1. You would yield a better listening experience from using the QS8 on the side than you would your MT's. More surround content is played via the side surrounds than the rear. Quite often the rears are matrixed to simulate the 7.1 mode.
