I'm not sure I understand your situation, but if you have a 5.1 system and there's a wall right behind where you sit, you might be able to mount the speakers on wall brackets and angle them towards the sitting area.

Another option might be to put them on stands if it's not in an area where people are likely to knock them over.
I have in-ceiling speakers in one of my 5.1 systems and I do not really care for it. The in-ceiling speakers provide some background effect (e.g. if you're watching a football game the crowd noise may be noticeable), but (at least in my systems) the ceiling surrounds are not very effective for movies.
