Rear speaker placement question

How critical is keeping the rear speakers of a 5.1 system equal distance apart from center. Due to room layout I would have one rear wall mount speaker about 3 ft. further from center then the other.

In my opinion three feet is nothing to worry about for a surround speaker. Just be sure to adjust the toe-in properly, and experiment with the loudness of that channel on your receiver. Perhaps you will find adding an increment or two of volume desirable, but I think that will depend on your room and in what direction the speaker is off 'center'.
