What is the minimum distance needed from the surrounds to the rear speakers to create a informable sound? of course iam asking from your listening and viewing perspective.
I have a limited arangment as far as distance goes and i wonder if the rears were just behind my favorite chair on the floor if it would offer another dimension,i could even fire them to the rear if this would help.My surounds are ear level on both sides of my favorite seat.

Thanks:)

I'd try putting them on either side, facing in as well as behind the chair facing out, and even on the floor facing up. You'll have to experiment with each to see if any or all of them give you what you are after. To me, ideally, you want surrounds at least a few feet behind you, and if you can't do that, then you will pretty much just have to experiment to find what works best for your specific setup.

Sorry, but the Chucker's rear speaker arrangement looks like a disaster to me.

you got that right, as a standard it should be only slightly behind you but also at your ear level when standing for a correct soundstage.

I've noticed I like the sound of surrounds at 90deg to the listening position if you can place the speakers the ~same distance as the fronts are from the primary spot. If they are closer I prefer a few feet behind and pointed in. On the floor firing up from behind the couch can work well too.

Granted, it does look like a disaster, but after quite a bit of tuning and tweaking it sounds phenomenal. I guess your rig sounded optimum right out the box, lucky you...

Ok,close being imediately behind the lounge chair on the floor.
That's where my surrounds are until I get some proper wall mounted surrounds. It's not the greatest, but if you already have surrounds and just want some ambient sound, it wouldn't hurt to try it out. See if you like it.
