I just added some B&W bookshelf's to my surround sound as the rear channel speakers. Movies sound amazing. But when I play music I get no sound. Is there a way to move between surround and stereo. My receiver is a Denon AVR-1912. Thanks

How many speakers do you have hooked up? My system is 7.2 , and it plays Spotify in 5.2, but same as you my rear surround speakers don't produce any sound when I play music.

I did some reading, and it seems to be a "problem" with the source, and not the equipment. I'm no expert but I think most music is recorded to be 2.1 channel. Someone with more knowledge correct me if I'm wrong.

Same way as you did with 5ch audio, use an upmixer like Dolby ProLogic II or DTS (Neo:X) versions built into your avr. Or even the multich stereo thing, which personally I don't care for.

I wish there were 2.1 but no native content that way, just by using your subs with your avr's bass management in stereo mode. Be fun if there were such....maybe.

What avr do you have where you can upmix to 5ch but not 7ch, tho?

I haven't tried those other modes. I was just using the 9 channel stereo mode. I have the Yamaha RX-A2040. It has a ton of different modes, but I just left it on the 9 channel stereo.

I've remember reading of some strange properties of that mode from another owner here sometime in the past with another Yamaha avr. I just prefer actual surround modes (rather than just putting the stereo signal in each pair of speakers), and would be same in your avr, to use an upmixer like that from Dolby or DTS.

I think it is because it is an older receiver. My previous Marantz pre./pro did not up mix 5.2 to 7.2. My much newer Marantz 7705 which has the latest DD upmixer does. It actually upmixes to 7.2.4.

So I think unless you update, that is what you are stuck with.

Some confusion here for sure. OP's sig shows no surround speakers in setup. Are the new speakers surrounds(5.1) or surround backs(7.1)? Check amp assignment. If surround/surround back channels are not configured, there will be no sound anyway.

The manual does indicate upmixing to 7.1 so it's not too old an avr. Good idea on the surrounds as far as avr speaker/channel setup goes, but since his signature differentiated between 5.1 and rear surrounds to come I expected that these new speakers are actual rear surrounds, but good to check....

ps I did reread the signature and think this is the issue since he didn't have surrounds listed, he might have added these speakers as rear surround in the setup instead of just surrounds; many units will ignore rear surrounds if no surrounds are present.

If your music source is from an app on your computer, to get multi-channel go into sound control panel and select the driver for the receiver you are using and configure it for 5.1. Right now it might be set for stereo.

Those older upmixers will upmix from 2 channel sources to 7.1 but not 5.1, which is strange. That is the way my older pre/pro worked anyway.

His manual says both 5.1 and 7.1 so he's good to go.

What is the sound mode being used for music playback?

To get surround speakers to produce sound from two channel music sources, press the MOVIE or MUSIC buttons on the bottom right side of the remote control to move between sound processing selections. Try Dolby Pro Logic IIx or DTS Neo:6 and see which of them you prefer for music playback. If you want the same sound from all speakers when playing music, keep pressing the MOVIE/MUSIC button until MULTI CH STEREO appears.

Thanks for the info. I will give it a try.

Sidebar: When playing a multi-channel stream from PC to AVR via HDMI with a stereo result, reconfiguration of the AVR's driver from stereo to multi-channel in sound control panel may be necessary.

One thing, the newer Denons at least you need to hold down the movie/music/game buttons for a few seconds to bring up the possible menus of sound modes....not sure if the older Denons made you do that. A brief press I believe just brings you to a sound mode matching what is currently being input....or again, that's how it works on my newer Denon.
