I purchased a set of used speakers and the rear surrounds are full sized bookshelf speakers. Great speakers, but quite large and heavy.
The font speakers and sub are relatively well positioned (pretty standard), still need to do some tweaking.
Unfortunately, the rear channels are hard to place properly.
Due to the configuration of the room (which can not be changed) my sofa is pressed up against the back wall and my surround speakers have to be directly against the sofa.
At present, I have them on the floor, on the sides of the sofa, facing forward.
Obviously, being on the floor is not ideal, as the drivers are actually further forward than my ears when sitting down, so all I hear is reflected sound.
I had thought about getting speaker stands, which would raise them to ear level ... but then my wife and I would have speakers about 6 inches from our ears.
I had also considered getting wall mounts ... but then we would have 30 lbs of speaker and mount hovering directly over our heads (would get seriously injured if something fell). Also, the size of the speakers with the mounts would have the drivers even further forward of my ears when seated.
The only two options I can think of are ...
Keeping the surround speakers on the floor next to the sofa and angling them upward toward the ceiling ... would probably be the best in terms of sound ... but would worry about stuff falling into the drivers.
The other, more expensive option ... would be top buy new rear flat panel speakers and mount them behind and above our seating position. Given the thickness of the sofa frame, a 3" thick speaker would be 4 or 5 inches behind the listening position AND I wouldn't be so worried about a flatter speaker falling on our heads.
Sadly, other than knowing they exist, I know nothing about flat panel speakers.
Any advice or tips you could give would be most appreciated.
