Really Testing the System

Well I have all the connections made to my H/T and really want to test the audio system. I've invested over 5k on speakers, receiver and a powerful sub. Now I want to hear what this baby can do.:D My musical interests include anything from jazz :sax, horns, bass, to hard rock : screaming guitars and drums. I can play in any format available.

Any recommendations on music discs will be appreciated.

sting, all this time, cd - particularly fields of gold, but lots of good wow factor. fantastically recorded live performance in italy in 2001. i also have the dvd, but for whatever reason it lacks the impact of the cd. this is what im currently listening to in analog-direct, and it's a fairly powerful experience. at -25 db, i can feel it vibrating my desk, and im in another room, approaching 30 feet from my speakers seperated by a wall. i have blown away multiple salespeople w/ this disk, & it's one of my reference test disks for bass response.

other favs - lucinda williams - world witout tears cd; death cab for cutie - john byrd ep on cd, track 3 has very solid bass throughout the song, and the statrt of track 5 goes deep as well; (also recommend their last 2 cd's - transatlanticism & plans, but for good music as opposed to wow factor);
rachel yamagata, the never can be... happenstance cd, fantastic recording, fantastic voice, & track 3 has good bass line, with some deep portions & great transients; diana krall - girl in the other room hybrid cd/sacd - fantastic recording & great sacd; snow patrol- track 7 has solid bass line - and before you panic the crackling at the start of the song is in the recording; damien rice -his first cd is exceptional, great music & ridiculous bass in portions if i remember correctly; recent exceptional classical finds is dvorak symphony no. 8 & 9 - philadelphia orchestra, wolfgang sawallisch conducting, on seraphim classics

If you have the SACD of 'Dark Side of the Moon', play Time. There is a bass portion that lasts ony a few seconds but will really rumble if your system goes low enough. This occurs in the first 1 or 2 minutes of the song. I changed front speakers and didn't hear it on the old speakers but felt it on the new speakers.

I can't remember the specific album now but on some of the rock albums recorded before the mid-80's, the soundroom quality was not very good. You can hear people bumping into things like mike stands, hitting guitars against things, etc. If your system doesn't go down far enough, you won't hear them.

Not music, but watch the last movie of the Lord of the Rings. Lots of rumblings that should rattle the house.
